What will you do when they want you to come in for a F2F interview the next day after doing a phone interview?

I do not think having a local phone number is considered on an employment application. Any phone number where you can be reached for an interview or for questions about your application works. Several people I work with have phone numbers outside the area code area.

FWIW, I don't have a number local to NC. I was interviewing in September/October. I did get asked how long I had been in the area on phone interviews. I also had a couple of phone interviews and then a very quick turnaround for F2F interviews.

Phone number won’t matter IMO. With cell phones people have tons of different area codes. A local address would likely help though.

Because if you are in New York, and the company wants to meet you the next morning, I doubt you can be there in time.

What type of work, educational and professional level, etc.? If you truly believe a local 704 or 980 # is required, you could get a local Skype #. Text messages may not work, but it's a local #.

For perceived security reasons, some people now only include city name & zip codes on their resumes. When unable to discuss local information, it's quickly exposed. Ultimately, most hiring companies/managers likely still prefer hiring locally for low to lower middle level roles. Purely common sense; Jack or Jill live/work locally, possibly more local market insights, lower likelihood of potential pre and post relocation issues exist, etc.

For upper middle to high level professional opportunities requiring well-qualified individuals and successful professional track records, local #s typically don't matter quite as much. At any level post-initial screening conversation(s), being fairly readily available for face-to-face interviews still matters. Regardless, good luck with your search.
