Hi there, I am posting this on a couple threads, since we're going to be traveling around, but long story short we're planning a family vacation to NC in March - visiting a cousin and seeing the sites. March 22- 29.
Hubby's got a master plan that includes Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Durham & Pinehurst. A lot of it involves NCAA and golf.
So, as you might guess, I am looking for some advice on family-friendly activities for me and my two boys (7 & 10) during the week.
I'd love to hear about little places where you learn about local history or culture, or zoos and things like that. Please share your personal favorites.
I can see this is a friendly forum and I really would appreciate any advice you can give.

I would probably cut Durham out and spend more time in Charlotte. Nothing in Durham (unless your cousins are there).
The NC Zoo is in Asheboro, NC 1/2 ways between Charlotte and Raleigh. When finished it will be the largest ZOO in the world!
In Charlotte things to intetrest youngsters...Carowinds Amusement Park, Rays Splash Planet (Indoor water park in Uptown Charlotte), ImagineOn, Discovery Place, US Whitewater Center (kayaking, rock climbing) it is where they will train for the US Olympics, just to name a few.

GOOD LUCK & enjoy NC!
Now wait a minute 7 oh 4 - if these kids are baseball fans they might really enjoy taking in a Durham Bulls game! 2008 Durham Bulls Baseball Club Don't say there is nothing to do in Durham!
Except I just noticed their season doesn't start until April 11
Well, I'm still going to leave this info up for others who might be thinking of visiting Durham later in the year

In the Winston Salem area consider visiting Old Salem - a great recreation of life back in the 1700-1800's in NC. Kind of like Colonial Williamsburg

Ok loves,
You are right (and usually are). I don't want to offend anyone in the Durham area.
The Discovery Place downtown would be an excellant choice, There are also tours of the Panther Stadium 704-358-7000(go online for schedule information). A trolly ride is fun for all ages. The Charlotte Checkers Hockey games - 704-342-4423, The Hezekiah Alexander homesite, and Old Salem is a must for everyone. Be sure to carry a big tote and stop by the bakeries and don't forget to wear comfortable shoes.
The Daniel Stowe Botanical Gardens are beautiful. Enjoy your visit!
I would also add to the Winston Salem places to check out
is the Reynolda House
The house use be the former estate of the Reynolds family (R.J. Reynolds)
Now it is American art gallery and museum. Self guided audio tours available
It is a gorgeous home and the time you plan to visit the garden will begin to bloom. Reynolda House
Discovery Place is fun, or if there are any events down at the arena during those times that would be fun too!
