The thread title speaks for itself. I need a really knowledgeable heart specialist in Charlotte. Here's my dilemma. I'm a 38 year old black male who exercises quite regularly (I can still run 1 mile in under 6.5 mins on a good day). I'm 6'4" and I weigh 205 pounds (much of that is muscle). I don't smoke and I don't drink. My diet is mostly Mediterranean style and I eat lots of fruits and vegetables. I do not consume a lot of carbs and my sodium intake is low.

On the other hand, I seem to now have high blood pressure. I'm consistently getting readings of 145/92 with a resting heart rate of 55. I understand that my lower heart rate is probably due to the fact that I run, bike, and play basketball a lot (active people usually have resting heart rates below 60). However, my high blood pressure is both a concern and a complete mystery to me. What complicates this situation even more is the fact that my career is on the line now that I have a blood pressure issue (truck drivers need to have BPs below 140/90).

On some level, this could very well be hereditary, but that's moot at this point. I need a doctor who knows more about the heart than the standard soapbox speech of "change your diet, get more active, lose some weight". None of that mess really applies to my case. Any way, thanks for whatever help you guys can suggest.

I see Dr Khawar Shaikh at Novant Heart and Vascular in Matthews and am very pleased with him and the practice. He listens to my opinions and is very open to my suggestions. I had aortic valve replacement 8 years ago before I moved here and so he has taken over the care from my previous Dr's and had done that very well.
The practice is across the street from the hospital in Matthews.

Urbancharlotte, Just wanted to ask are you stressed/anxious? I know two people (men in their 30's - not related to each other) that were recently diagnosed with anxiety. Both had high blood pressure readings and after many tests it was determined that the cause was stress/anxiety. One was in the hospital for 2 days while they checked him over and made sure he didn't have a heart attack.

I hope you find what is causing it and am sending you good vibes!
