I felt safer in my previous locations of NJ, FL, and TX. Here it seems the crime is much more spread out vs. the other cities that I lived in the crime was isolated to a few bad spots.

Mount Holly...feel very safe here so far. In fact for the c*** Gaston county takes for crime, I don't see a comparison to Charlotte. Its not even close.

Anyone hear of anything in Waxhaw? Off of Waxhaw Marvin? I hear its safe. I am coming from Montclair, NJ an EXTREMELY safe township to live! Taxes are out of this world, but I love this place I grew up in. Just tooooo expensive to live anymore.

Originally from Brooklyn, NY and now resides in SE Charlotte. I feel so much safer here than in the big city. There will always be times where one do not feel safe and we should listen to our instincts and protect ourselves. Because NY is so much bigger, crimes was an everday occurence; NY'ers walk around with a different perspective that something may happen. Here people tend to be more relaxed and are shock when something happens.

Well, I moved from Charlotte to Ocean Isle Beach which has a low crime rate. Yet I don't feel any safer here because I still walk around with the Charlotte mentality- watching my back at gas stations, being watchful of my neighborhood and who may not belong, being wary in parking lots at night. Can't shake the mental attitude.

But I'm a cautious person. Never been a crime victim, and FWIW, when I lived in Charlotte I felt reasonably safe so long as I used common sense. I lived in the University area off Tryon Street actually. Went to UNCC, then later worked in Uptown.I tried not to go out alone at night, etc. Not overly cautious, just tried to be aware of my surroundings. I felt less safe in mall parking lots and at gas stations, and in parking lots in general at night.

Honestly no, NJ doesn't seem safer than Charlotte to me. I visited family there in Upper Saddle River years ago and also went to New York City. I felt the same, safe enough if I was cautious. But more intimidated in NJ/NYC only because I was totally unfamiliar with the areas and neighborhoods, I didn't know where the less safe areas were. It's the unknown..you'll feel safer where you are most knowledgable and familiar.

THAT word is censored? LOL!

Yeah, I always heard bad things about Gaston County especially Gastonia itself, but I worked there for a little while and it was the first time I'd ever been there ever, my first day of work (transferred within my company)....I thought it was extremely safe, much safer than most areas of Charlotte. And again I never felt too unsafe in Charlotte, with caution. Avoided certain areas, did most of my shopping in midday, kept my doors locked and a phone with me, watchful of my environment, tried not to go out alone at night or to malls if I'd be carrying a lot of packages or around Christmas shopping time...etc...

Ok I am in moderator forum playing scrabble with your word with other moderators trying to figure out what the mystery censor word is LOL.
I thought crap but that is allowed it the software that does this not city data but we can modify what words are added or not.
If it not vulgar help us out by using a space between each letter if you want.

I have never felt unsafe in Gastonia except for my trips inside the haunted mill but when I am in that city it usually shopping along restaurant row.

I am from Oakland CA and I feel safe in Charlotte. I live in the NE area - Mallard Creek/Harris.

The impression I get from these forums is that Charlotte is horribly crime infested. I think a lot of this is over reaction. I don't know if there is so little going on that everything is overblown or if people are used to a sammler town atmosphere.

Generally, I don't go to or hang out in high crime areas. The other minor crimes are what I would expect in a city of Charlotte's size.

I suppose that's why this is all about one's geographical referent: Oakland is a pretty tough place. For what it's worth, isn't Oakland normally considered one of the most dangerous cities in the US?
