Here is the info for York County:

York County counts on its credibility to stop crime at the state line

We have seen an increase," said York County Sheriff Bruce Bryant. "A lot of violent crimes, armed robberies and things like that, are coming from people who are coming down from North Carolina."

One such crime, the Dec. 22, 2007 armed robbery at Bank of York in Lake Wylie, resulted in two men receiving life sentences without parole and the arrest of two others.

"Our sheriff's office did a fantastic job in this case," Brackett said. "This was just a terrible crime. They were in there about five minutes."

I was feeling somewhat concerned two months ago w/ the home invasions and rash of break-ins, but CMPD has apprehended so many of those thugs . . . and the break-ins (w/ residents at home) seem to have slowed down . . . so I am not as concerned now. I think people are more aware about who is in their neighborhoods (driving around, stopping at houses, etc) and more neighborhoods have developed Crime Watches . . . so I am feeling like the strange things that happened were tied to particular thugs who are now identified. I am feeling like people are being more cautious . . . so all these things are making me feel we all are working at "taking back our city"from the criminals. Now I know other crime is going on here, like everywhere, but it is the home invasions that were upsetting me the most . . . I think things are getting back to a more "normal" state and will continue to improve. We have to get these thugs off our streets!!!! For good!!!

Now before someone starts bringing up the recent home invasions...those are exceptions rather than the rule. It is not uncommon for nicer areas to experience this kind of crime wave. Eventually the neighborhoods take note, buck up and the wave will disappear. ANYTIME you have anything nice you will always be a target.

Thanks a lot!!! I'll check those areas too!

A lot of property crime and robberies happen in Ballantyne, Arboretum, South park, Dilworth, etc. Criminals tend to rob people who have things.

But let's put it in perspective. Just because there has been many news reports lately, does not mean that these areas are not safe. They are - they are very safe. Most crime accounts from business people leaving their valuables in their cars, etc. Yes there have been some home invasions, but like QCP said, people with nice things will always be targets. I live in Ballantyne and have NEVER felt unsafe.

I guess it's all relative because all though I am only 5 minutes or so from Ballantyne, I feel much safer in York County. I am not saying that Ballantyne is unsfafe, but more crime happens there than in the area I live in.

ssd3 - Here's a little gem of information.

It contains a wealth of information. I knew about this website before City-Data and much of the info will overlap. Check out the Crime header. You can compare 2 cities. It's always better to have too much information than not enough!

Thanks for the info. I wish I knew about this site before commiting to moving to NC.

Where I live now NJ violent crime = 1
property crime=1
population=8,628

Where I am moving in NC which I thought was considered safe
Violent crime= 5
property crime=5
Population= 10,599
Both towns are rural and about an hour outside of a city
My house in NJ 1 hour from Philly and NYC
My new house in NC 1 hour from Charlotte

ssd3 - But you have to admit that your taxes would be a "8" in NJ and a "1" in NC. At least down here you can do something about crime yourself. You can walk into a Walmart here and buy a gun. Try that in NJ! If you do happen to shoot a burglar here, it's no big deal! You can call the cops and tell them you were threatened and in fear for your life, and could they please come and remove the corpse ASAP! In NJ, you'd hear the screams and knashing of teeth of the burglar's relatives on WCBS that night saying what a wonderful person he was! No one really cares if you do a "Dirty Harry" impression in NC!
