Where do you feel safer?
So much talk about home invasion, neighborhood watch and car abductions. Boy, NJ seems sooooo safe now, thank you.
For those who have moved, do you feel safer now or in you previous location? And where did you come from>

Depends on where you live in the Charlotte area. Personally I feel VERY safe where I live and crime is really not a factor.
I use to live in NY (Manhattan), NW Washington & Atlanta. I feel just as safe in Charlotte as anywhere.
Depends on where just as it would in any city. There tends to be more crime in the suburbs than inner city due to more police protection in the center city.
No more crime per capita than any other large metropolitan city in my opinion. You do need to avoid some areas though.
NEVER let your guard down...no matter what city you are in...it is 2008!!!

I have not felt concerned until lately - I am in S. CLT. I moved here from the Kansas City metro area - where the crime rate is about 1/4 of the national average - and I definitely felt much safer there. Also, we had very attentive police. They even patrolled our neighborhood at least twice during the nite b/cn midnite and 6 am - I would hear their cruisers go by. Any time neighbors called PD (for any reason) they never took longer than 7 mins to show up and usually it was less than five minutes. So yes, I felt totally safe there. And did not own any firearms, either - didn't feel I needed to do that.

Keep in prospective that the members of this forum that live here may make up 1% (if that much) of the supposely nine county area and even though all crime should be consider these are incidents happening in a very large metro area.
I moved from Lexington (a hour north of Charlotte) a city I would leave my car windows down as I went into a restaurant and a subdivision only non neighbor cars that would pass is the mailman, newspaper lady and the UPS truck.
I live now in Huntersville and I knew I would have to be a little more vigilant like locking my car in my driveway careful at atm's etc. I became a little more vigilant but I feel generally safe. For instance right now I have most of the house windows open and depending on the evening temperature they might stay that way during the night.
I love shopping for shoes on Freedom Drive (West Charlotte) I know to do that during the day and I am extremely vigilant when I shop in that area.
On the east side around Independece and Idlewild I am spooked day or night LOL.
I want to get in and out of that area quickly as possible but that is probably most do to my head playing games with me since I am not familiar with that area. The area looks rough in my opinion. I went inside of the bank and I was looking over my back.
In general I feel safe in Charlotte and its communities. Common Sense helps and knowing areas around here that are a little sketchy helps.
I feel so safe that a member posted a thread asking about an area around Major Street in West Charlotte and I went yesterday to take pictures of the area because I knew the area wasnt too bad far as crime compare to other parts.
It might be my level of feeling secure in the area. Last summer I drove a scooter I have down Beatties Ford Road to Uptown (another sketchy area) and I know I was easy unusual target (because of not the area general race, and on a scooter). I felt fine by my second trip doing this except the guys by the pay phones near the street made me nervous (again my head playing tricks).
Charlotte and communities is still a great city if I was to leave and come back I would still choose this area without crime being a deterrent from living here. I know where the rough areas are and newcomers are more than welcome on this forum to ask about an area and people will share their opinion.

About the same. We used to live in CT, near Hartford. You had to really stay on your toes in Hartford (one morning I witnessed two cars tearing down the street with guns blazing at each other), but the suburbs were much better, usually just lots of vandalism. More than a few kid's fathers I knew carried concealed handguns. I think the schools here are much safer than what I remember in CT. Most armed robberies ended in bloodshed, unlike here.
After that, we were in Albany, NY. Albany, Schenechtady, Troy - not good, actually rather bad. Lots and lots of people with guns. The suburbs and outlying areas, much better.
Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Jamestown, and Burlington always felt safe, although my parents apartment in GSO was robbed.
I've never felt unsafe in Charlotte or Concord or up here around Lake Norman.

All this talk of firearms on this site is a little worrisome. I do not or will never own a gun. Especially with children in my home. I wouldn't even let my children go to the home of a friend, because they told me there was a gun in the house. Too many accidents, children and adults. We believe in the good old fashion baseball bat and barking mutt.

Again this is large area you should also take in prospective the amount of the population that has not witness or a victim of any crime each day.
The news may report that 1 murder on the east side and that is is pretty good since they dont report 499.000 people was not involve
(not by any means saying a murder is nothing nor verified population number)

When we lived in Parker, CO, we felt very safe. Very seldom did we hear any sirens (fire or police) and the local PD was less than a 1/2 mile away. In fact, a couple of years ago, we accidentally left our front door completely unlocked for a week. One other time, my wife accidentally left the garage door open (and the door going into the house from the garage was unlocked)........absolutely nothing happened either time. Safe neighborhood? We'd say "yes" (along with some luck).
Now we live in Huntersville, in what sure appears to be a very safe apartment complex to us.
Firearms? Yes, but only rifles (3 w/trigger locks) and no kids. But, if we did have kids, we would still have the rifles. We would teach them "firearms safety" and keep Trigger Locks on them. The wife and I love target shooting. We both grew up around firearms (rifles).

In all fairness I don't know if you could tell that to residents of Newark, Irvington, and Camden.
