I could go with I-626. I think the only even three-digit I-85 left is 685 right?
I-485 is the Charlotte Loop/Beltway, the new I-285 is US-52 connecting Lexington and W-S, and the future I-885 is the new East End Connector in the Triangle, connecting I-85 and I-40.
I suppose they could have used 474 instead of 285.
I suppose they could have used 474 instead of 285.
That wouldn't have worked, since I-74 is to the east of where I-285 ends at I-40 in Winston-Salem.
The only options for what became I-285, if you follow the proper numbering rules, would have to be either an even I-_85 or even I-_40. The only even I-_40 in North Carolina left, is I-640.
I-285 could have been I-685, but that's about it. It makes sense that it's an I-_85, since it comes off of I-85 as a "directional Y" interchange and then ends perpendicular to I-40.
I have always found it amazing that there is no quick/direct route from Charlotte to Myrtle Beach. After decades, I still get confused at times. This improvement is a start. Maybe by the year 2300, it will be easier?
