Charlotte-Mecklenburg city/county jobs???
Hello all, I am pretty confindent that I have not seen a specific thread on this. If I am wrong please advise. I am yet another Northerner (Long island,NY) attempting to move to this fine and very attractive area. My girlfriend and I have slated July 1st as being our "offical" move down date. We are fortunate in that her dad lives in Mint Hill and is so kindly willing to put us up until we can thrive. We have savings and will continue to save until time. She: Health care field/medical administaration, Bachelors degree. Me: Commercial class B drivers license/desire to pursue higher education once there. Currently attempting to secure contacts and employment down there from New York. She has some promising prospects inwhich she will be flying down soon for interveiws (fingers crossed). I've been hitting all the various local sites including CharMeck.ORG. I checked the city job listings and have seen quite a few interesting listings. The pay is a little low understandably(lower cost of living), I would so deal with it just to make an inroad towards my goals. I've done a sanitation route before and would even revert to that. Can any tell me if city/county jobs on average take a long time to get? I realize that this may vary potentially. Is it one of those deals where it may take years and you must keep applying? I see that some jobs appear to reside damn near in every listing, what am I to gather from this? I hope that this is not too esoteric, just want to get some kind of consensus. Thanks in advance.

I would think your g/f can find work and indeed, it sounds as tho she has some potential opportunities lined up. If she has not checked w/ the area hospitals, then I would suggest she do that, as not only will they have openings for the hospitals themselves - many physician practices hire thru/ the hospital's HR dept.
As for city jobs, I have no clue how difficult those jobs are to land . . . but would assume it would be helpful to have a local address when applying. So perhaps you want to use your g/f's dad's address when applying for these jobs - or wait til you get here to apply for them.
You mentioned pursuing more education once you get here. We have many avenues for education here . . . depends on your degree. If you want an AA, then CPCC is a wonderful place to work on that . . . and then you can transfer credits if you want to get your bachelor's degree.

Thanks for the reply anfani821. I realize that the answer may vary in terms of the city jobs. I know that there are no concretes here. We have started to use his address and phone number on our resumes and communications. Don't know where all of this is going to take us but we gotta go for it. Thanks for the collage suggestion as well, duly noted.

It really depends. The hiring process for white collar positions in City or County gov is generally a 3 month process. The hiring process for blue collar positions tends to be quicker averaging around 4 to 6 weeks. The important thing to keep is mind is the closing date for the position(s) you're interesting in. The quicker a position closes the more likely the process will go at a quicker pace. Having a CDL is huge leg up for you as you will generally find that City or County gov will hire some blue collar folks contingent upon the person passing the CDL test. So if you already come with a CDL, the hiring person doesn't have to worry about the passing the test, which makes you ready for work immediately.
