My immediate reaction is why doesn't the public water department downsize like every other business that faces a decrease in revenue (I already know the answer).

Exactly.
It's not a business, it's government!

Washing my car regularly and not feeling bad about it...

Here's an unpopular view - when I discussed this with my husband he said "Water is subsidized and too cheap anyway. They should have raised the price way before they had to put restrictions in place. The more you use the more it'll cost ya. Americans don't get it - we have never had to truly pay for our wasteful and over-consumptive ways."

Discuss!

I agree, let the market dictate the price via supply and demand.

Your husband has an interesting theory.

It just saddens me that this is one more expense to squeeze our already tight budget. I know my raise last year wasn't big enough to cover rising prices. I suppose I should just be grateful to have a job at all... but still, it's getting tougher and tougher to pay the bills each month.

I need to win the lottery. Scratch that. I need to PLAY the lottery. (If I had the extra $$$ to buy a ticket!!!)

Your husband might have had a point - LAST SUMMER. Don't use the police and the power of government to force people to use less water and THEN punish them for complying. If one wants to use rates to force to people to conserve, then that should have been the plan.

I agree...they should have raised the rates when the restrictions went into effect.

Agreed. I think his point is that water should have been much more costly for a long time.

Hmm, I feel guilty buying Chilean grapes at 99 cents a lb. knowing the true carbon cost is extremely high.

I fear the US economy and our way of life is mostly built upon a deck of cards, which are now tumbling down, fast.

Thank you for conserving, here is your penalty for your conservation. (which you will note will be coming to you every month from now on.)

Back in December I said this was coming, (Water Conservation Pricing)the only thing I missed was I really thought Asheville would be the leader in this move
