Default I'm so tired of defending my children's NC's education to other Northerners

We frequently get mocked by friends and relatives, still living in NY/NJ, about our move South.
But this last e-mail takes the cake. It contained a video attachment of Kelly Pickler making a fool out of herself on a game show, because she didn't know Hungary was a country. The e-mail read: "Boy, am I proud to have a Northeastern education."
What is wrong with people? Why bother sending this to someone who has just relocated to NC?
I sent this person an e-mail explaining that our children actually had to be tutored for several months, because the education they received in New Jersey was NOT up to par with what is being taught in their schools here in NC!
People are just so ignorant!

Sorry, just had to vent....

Sounds like they are jealous. My kids go to Marvin Elementary and I feel that we are getting a top notch education....our experience here blows away the TERRIBLE experience we had in Massachusetts.

Sounds like your family is jealous. My BIL makes fun of where we live all the time, but it is because he is jealous that we moved away and he is still there.

I don't blame you for being upset. Whenever I have mentioned my desire to move to NC I invariably get the response, "I would never consider that while my children are in school. You have to think of their education, getting into college. NJ has a great education system." To which I usually respond "You don't think anyone raised in the South has ever gone to college?" People are ridiculous. They make blanket statements without any real knowledge of what they are speaking. Sounds very educated to me.

I clearly need an education in how to use the icons. The face was supposed to be at the end of my last sentence. LOL

Are you originally a yank (no offense)? Give a notherner a reason to joke around and they will. Besides, they have nothing over NC education. Tenured, union teachers and who only care about getting a paycheck. Over 20k per student, cheaper for the state to send them all to private school. Yes, and Newark, Camden, Irvington, Trenton, East Orange, (shall I continue) have such wonderfull schools.

Seeing as how the school district I reside in is in the top 5% of schools nationally, I really don't care what they say about outhern education. Also, my future fil is from Albermarle and has an engineering degree from NC State.

Some of the better colleges are in the South. Imagine that . I still think most of it depends on the student and parents. it does not matter where you are from.

Dear me. How ridiculous! Sounds like someone in your world has bought into the stereotype that Southerners are hicks and our educational systems are inferior.

Here is what amazes me about this attitude. The majority of students in our colleges are "home grown." That means that institutions wh/ are highly recognized, such as Duke, Davidson, Carolina, Wake Forest, NC State, are educating NC students. And last time I looked, parents from all over the country were hoping their kids would be accepted at these NC universities. (And let's not forget the fine universities and colleges in SC, as well!!!) AppState, w/ its highly rated Walker School of Business, has been recognized as one of the top ten most affordable/highly ranked universities in the USA. There is fierce competition to get into our med schools. So if Southerners (and NC in particular) are such illiterate yahoos - how is it possible that our universities are so highly esteemed?

I bet the very person who sent the email would be thrilled if her kids were accepted into one of our fine institutions of higher learning. And as for junior colleges - have you checked out CPCC's rankings? This is a wonderful institution, also.

So kiss my grits!!!! Have you ever noticed that by the time people reach the age 30, you can't tell a bit of difference b/n the people who got that blue ribbon NJ education and those who didn't? LOL!! I was talking to my son, who is in CHI, and I asked him - "Can you tell who in your neighborhood has a college degree from a prestigious institution just by interacting w/ him/her ?" HECK NO, he said. Of course you can't!

Same for elementary and high school educations . . .

Reminds me of people who move here and are so concerned about making sure their "gifted" child receives a premium education amongst all the "less gifted" local children. All of us think our kids are gifted. They all grow up and turn out to be about the same - few end up being Nobel Prize Winners.

Give me a break.

stmaarten-

Besides the area public schools, there are plenty of excellent private schools.
