I was brought up that you get what you worked for, I don't expect or want any help from government except to stop increasing my taxes at a much higher rate than money I can bring in...

Spending more than what we get in, it is unrealistic and can only lead to future failure.
If you are working, you're paying into both of those. That's your money. It's not welfare or a "benefit." You paid for it. You might want it back one day.
