They are more scared of you than you are of them....in most cases lol...a nice square shovel takes care of them. If that's to close get a gun with snake pellets. Unfortunetley they are def. here....sometimes in the worst place possible.

Some of you may remember my mentioning Sidney our resident snake on the lake. My husband just photographed Sidney taking a saturday snooze on our dock. Sidney posed as best he could and then reluctantly returned to the lake prodded by a pole my husband keeps nearby.

Elenak - Sidney is a fine-looking Northern Water Snake. Keep him around!

Default This and that

Coming from upstate NY, I was surprised to see how common the copperhead is here in the Charlotte area. I've come across them while jogging in South Charlotte, as well as on golf courses nearby.
Once, I met a friendly gentleman whose home borders the nine hole Cove course at Tega Cay Golf. I'd hooked a ball into a wooded area adjacent to his home. He warned me to be careful searching for my ball, as he had just killed a snake the day before. When I asked what type, he answered, "Copperhead. Want to see?"

Of course, I did. Without delay I followed him into his place. There in a backroom refrigerator, enclosed in a transparent freezer bag was a sure-enough copperhead. The package as I remember it, lay upon another see-through package that contained chicken or steak.

"I've never heard of anyone eating a copperhead," I told him. They're not like rattlers... a bit tough but tasty."

"Oh, I don't eat them.

"I'm sorry. Then why do you keep them."

"To show folks like you," he said.

I'm glad, I'm curious. I get a chance to meet some really interesting people. I'm glad ,too, that I'm a writer. Being curious goes with the territory. It's a lovely terrain.
