I am starting a new job based in Charlotte, NC - I currently live in Wisconsin and have never even visited North Carolina. I am looking for suggestions on the best place to live and raise a family with teenagers. I am looking to buy a home no more then $300K and a good highschool and easy commute are important. My husband is an auto technician and needs space to have a shop as well as a garage - so probably not a sub-division with restrictions.

Any suggestions on where to start looking?

I'd say your looking at East Lincoln county. Good schools, low taxes, positive growth, lake access, safe, and very commutable to Charlotte--about 20 minutes. Focus on Denver.

I'd say Mint Hill, but I don't know anything about the schools.

It's bad advice! You CANNOT get from Denver to uptown in 20 minutes...why lead a person to think that?

Actually, you are assuming. No where in the OP did they say they were working downtown.

And neither have they said the times they were commuting.

So, my advice is correct based on the facts given so far.

Are you telling me you can't get from 73/16 to Charlotte in 20 minutes? You then, are incorrect sir.

Besides the fact you are going way off topic for this thread if you look at this map carolina guy is correct. Follow 485 on this map, Charlotte is mostly on the inside of this beltloop Brookshire Blvd & Mt Holly-Huntersville Rd, Charlotte, NC, USA - Google Maps

ajjodie this area of Charlotte on the map is really nice and peaceful. It has not been overly saturated with development like the rest of the city is. Gorgeous large size homes but Lincoln County, (Denver is a wise choice) is better with their school system.
