No School Nurses in Lincoln County
I was reading the school website and from what I read Lincoln County Schools do not have school nurses , they said there are some staff members trained in first aid. Has anyone ever heard of this? I don't think I like that very much.

Not every school system has funding for school nurses. If I were you, I would call to the prospective school where you will live and ask them how things would be handled w/ a sick child, administration of meds, etc (whatever is concerning you). I am sure they will be glad to assist you.

I would think this is one of the things they would make sure was in the budget. Since people do sue over even the little things. I can't imagine if a student had an asthma attack or went into anaphylaxis shock and the "trained" person is not able to handle such a problem. I am concerned about this because all three of my children are asthmatic and one has a severe nut allergy and has gone into anaphylaxis shock.

I did read that they have a nurse that makes the rounds to the different schools and that she would be there once a week also. I hope and pray if my kids get sick that it will be on the day that the nurse is on duty.

Nurses are a luxury in many schools. Will your child have an epi-kit at school? And atomizers? Just call and explain the situation and see what they advise. I grew up here and most of the county schools have not had full time nurses. However, many of the teachers, Principal and Asst. Principal and coaches have CPR and Red Cross First Aid certification. I am sure they won't mind explaining how they meet the children's needs - so just give them a call this week.

Thanks Ani, I will call tomorrow. We do have an epi-kit and nebulizer. Do you think the absence of school nurses is going to change in the near future with so many more kids now in the schools? Just wondering if this is a concern for most or is it just because I am coming from an area where there has always been a nurse available.

Well, I just don't know. Here is how my experience has been. When my son was beginning school, I lived nearby in another county, but my son attended a city school. However, they did not have a full time nurse. It was the top notch city elementary school. But the teachers had first aid (certified Red Cross) and so did Asst. Principal and Principal. They had a nurse several days a week. My son had to take allergy meds, so the Asst. Principal administered them. He also has severe eczema - and that was just awful - he could come to school and be fine, but then if his feet got moist during the day, they would start bleeding!!!! So he would have to have them bandaged (I made sure they had his bandages there) and they would let him put on his meds. So he was treated like a million bucks - and you know how uptight I was w/ my precious kindergartner going off to school . . . but they were just wonderful.
Now when we moved out of state, there was a fulltime nurse at all the schools in that system - that was standard. So I got used to that . . .
I guess the thing is . . . as long as you communicate well w/ the school (and I am sure they have forms to fill out) and they will have a special place for the nebulizers and epi kit . . . I personally would not be concerned, b/c let's face it - most of the teachers are probably parents, too, and know exactly how you feel. They are going to do everything possible to protect your children and make sure they are safe.
But I do know why you are concerned. It is so hard to send them off to ANY situation when they have problems like asthma and food allergies.

The whole system is flawed. One day in class, my daughter said she didn't feel well so her teacher sent her to the office. I have always told her teachers if she doesn't feel well, call me and I will come get her. Ofcourse the nurse was not in that day so the office merely took her temp, and b/c it wasn't high they sent her back to class. They didn't even call me to ask if I would like to come get her, which I would have. I don't want her to not feel well and have to sit in class that way. I think having a nurse one time a week is ridiculous. These are children for heavens sake and they get sick a lot, and they need to have a nurse there every day of the week as the office staff clearly does not know what to do if a child feels ill.

That is the pits. The school always called me b/c they didnt want one sick child infecting the others. I am like you - I will go get my child - no problem.
