Need comments from relocatees to Union County
Hi. I am new to this forum, although I have been on other ones regarding moving to the Charlotte area. My husband and I have been researching moving to Union County for over a year now. We like Hunter Oaks.We are from LI NY and it has been hard for us to find jobs since pay is so low compared to what we make in NY. We are now researching buying a franchise. I know we will love it in NC and I am ready to move. But, all of a sudden my husband is getting cold feet about moving to NC. He is not sure that a NYer will feel welcome. We also have 3 teens. It would be a great help if a fellow northerner can let us know what it was like moving to NC and if you like it and if you would do it again. It might help my husband make up his mind!!!Thanks so much!!! ajoy

I laughed about your comment regarding your husbands concern that NYers wont feel welcomed......Union County is pretty much Little NY. Hard to find a Carolina grown human down here, so no need to worry about that

Just do a search on this forum and you'll find tons of positive comments from those whom have transferred from NY/NJ (like myself) to Union County (like myself). Of course, not everyone is happy but it appears to me that the overwhelming majority are satisfied with their move.
Good luck!
SL
PS
My husband did NOT want to leave Jersey. He is very, very happy about the decision to come here now. He really, really likes it.

Hi Ajoy! I hope all is well with you I look forward to seeing you again once the husband's cold feet disappear...
Cold feet is so completely normal. You already know how I feel about our move -- of course this was 8+ years ago. I can't imagine moving back to NY -- not sure I could even afford to at this point, but I certainly wouldn't want to give up what we have here. Keep me posted on your plans. Some other posters have said that the job market tends to pick up after the new year...keeping my fingers crossed. Best of luck to you

Like most folks here I am also looking to relocate. However, my decision is hinging on obtaining employment. Can you share what you hubby is doing or some resources? I am in IT as well and I am having some difficulty.

definitely like NY
Hi,
I can tell you that everyone in our neighborhood is from the northeast on our side of union county-wesley chapel and Waxhaw. We made a very quick decision and bought our house on the 1st trip. The area is the best in Charlotte (in my opinion) and it realy does feel like the north excpet I can't find any good pizza places! We have been down two times os far to pick out optiosn and move in June. We can't wait!
It sounds like you are doing a lot of research so just follow your heart now!

We moced from CT 2 years ago and we absolutely love it here! My hubby wouldn't go back up north for a million dollars!
You may make a little less yearly in income, but what you save on property taxes, gas and housing will more than make up for it. Basically the cost of living is less here than it is up there. We on average pay about $800-900 less a month here than we did in CT!
As for feeling like an outsider...no way! Everyone here is so nice and they all were very welcoming to me and my family. Best of luck to you in your move!

We built a house in Quellin (union county off of waxhaw-marvin rd). The new elementary school, Kensington, boasted 90% of their families from the ny/nj area when it opened. We have moved a lot and Quellin met all of our expectations in a neighborhood- it services Weddington Middle and High which are both excellent schools. This side of Union Cty/ Rte 16 is growing faster than the other side of RTE 16 Wesley Chapel with 2 new elementary schools already built to service the overflow from Weddington Elementary (which means less chance that your child will have to move elementary schools multiple times). The schools are newer than Wesley Chapel - and we've heard that Wesley Chapel students will need to move schools several times until the growth patterns are consistent. Being on the side of 16 that our neighborhood (Quellin/Cureton) is on gives you the ability to "hop" onto 521 to get to 485 as well as 16. The other side of town only gives you 1 way out for traffic accidents... something to consider when commuting. We love our neighbors, and our neighborhood has a community clubhouse as well as pool.
