Does anyone have the "quickest" route from NY City to Charlotte? How long does it take? Actually, we could also us a route from NY City to the Smokey Mts. first and then to Charlotte. Depending on how long the trip takes, we may want to take a detour and check out the mountains first. We have a Garmin but not sure if it will give the quickest way.

78 to 81 to 77 is probably the fastest.

78-81-77 will take you through the mountains in Va., too. Are you sure it's faster than 95-85? I think it took me 11 hours driving through the night that way (caught just a little bit of traffic on the GW going into the city at 530 am. I guess you would avoid the traffic in Delaware, Baltimore and DC going 78-81-77, but I think it that takes you a little out of the way.

Do not use I95/I85, that way sucks. To much traffic and unscheduled delays. Use #81 and you will parallel the Blueridge parkway. It is a very nice drive through nice towns. Go to I-77 and you are practically there.

Tad, sorry I never sent you the directions. I will do it today. Definitely 78-81-77. We have done 95 and there was way too much traffic. Leaving at 3:30 or 4:00 am is a must so you avoid the traffic in Manhattan.

Default NJ to NC

Here's the thread on driving down from NJ to NC. I thought you should see the one re: I-81 cautions.
