ROFL!!! I love this thread, HEE HEE HEE HEE.

Many people in NC feel invaded by "Yankees." We have seen our countryside turn into housing developments. We have seen the genteel South become rude b/c the people who have moved here are rude. NOT EVERYONE, of course. But it only takes a few in a neighborhood to ruin the inexplicable je nais c'est quois, no? Y'all Yankees just accept it b/c that is what you are used to! Why are we to embrace that? Rude is rude. I will never embrace rude.

You know, Gov-elect Bev Perdue ran a series of ads in eastern NC . . . wh/ were focused on Northern States sending their trash down South. I about rolled b/c it was a double entendre - sending Yankee trash South. Evidently, the newcomers didn't get what she was REALLY saying, but the natives did. And so the unenlightened masses voted for this gal . . .who was appealing to Southern anger about being invaded by Yankees . . . and the newcomers DID NOT GET IT!!! That is what your Gov called newcomers - Yankee trash! ROFL!!!

I did not vote for her as I think she is a bottom feeder . . . but what a chuckle I have had over this. Yankees are "in your face" . . . Southerners speak in subtleties. (Unless we are angry and then we do not talk - we just open up a can of Whup A$$).

Oh . . . and as for diversity . . . Lord have mercy. All Southern families embrace gay people b/c we all have at least one nephew or uncle who is gay. And every church hopes they are so lucky as to have a gay organist and/or choir director. And every Southern Belle has at least three gay friends to help her with her decorating and to be her escort when her fiancee/hubby is not available. And we embrace other religions - find them fascinating! We invite people of other religions to come to our churches and educate us about their religions!!! And we don't care what color you are, either, cause most white people have black relatives and most black people are part white. We just don't talk about that a lot, but we are all fully aware!!!! And we do not care!!! You all just do NOT GET IT!!!! We have no hang ups about DIVERSITY!!!

Newcomers look around and they don't see what they are used to and they start making ASSUMPTIONS!!! Nothing is changing here as far as DIVERSITY!!!!! We like newcomers - just not newcomers who are rude and happen to be Yankees who arrive and start COMPLAINING!!!

Nostalgia is not complaining!! We totally get that you miss your bagels!! WE LIKE THEM, TOO!! Otherwise, why are their bagels on every corner here? No, they may not be like the ones you are used to, but they are still bagels. We have our favorite BBQ - and we ARGUE in our own families about what makes good BBQ!! We get it that you miss your favorites - but we just don't wanna hear you COMPLAINING HOW GREAT IT WAS ELSEWHERE AND HOW MISERABLE YOU ARE HERE, cause when you do that, we have NO SYMPATHY.

Why do we have no sympathy? Have you ever seen how Southerners get treated "up North?" We would never be so stupid as to whine to anyone in NYC that we are miserable b/c we can't get our BBQ there! We KNOW we can't get it there. We wait til we get home to eat it. Don't you see the point here? How many Southerners did you EVER MEET who actually were living where you came from? I BET NOT ONE!!!!!!

I was the only Southerner most people had ever met in Kansas City! People told me that over and over. Anyone ever wondered why you don't meet Southerners living in Long Island? Cause we don't like it there!!!!

So when you come down here and wax poetic about all the things you miss, we are like . . . so go back there!!!

Now I stated b/f . . . I don't necessarily hold these views . . . cause I hope the influx of newcomers will eventually mean that you all bring the things you love WITH YOU - so the rest of us can enjoy them!!! I am glad to see more choices here . . . but I do agree that when others move here and WHINE WHINE WHINE (and I do not mean nostalgically recall their favorite bagel shop) . . . I am talking about the ongoing laundry list that SOME newcomers have about the crummy schools, all the rednecks, all the hicks, all the accents, the crummy food, the trashy trailers, the lack of mass transportation . . . then my reaction is to say . . . why the hell did you come here when you knew things were so different? And why are you STAYING??? And why would you expect the natives here to embrace such DISAGREEABLE PEOPLE????

As I have written many times before, I AGREE - the constant complainers are not the majority!!! But I feel certain that ALL OF YOU know someone like this - whether you are a native or a newcomer!

Well, I can see where Southerners would form that opinion. One of the first things newcomers like to mention as a reason for moving here is LOWER TAXES and that they could never have afforded a house like they have now in their former town . . . so the listener could interpret that as people fleeing here to take advantage of lower taxes and housing costs . . . kinda like a political refugee. . . fleeing the city to go somewhere that they can live a better life . . . b/c of financial oppression elsewhere. So that is kinda like a refugee. I mean, people are fleeing . . . Just saying . . . it could be interpreted that way . . .

Well, it was just a perspective. I can also understand how using the word "refugee" would seem inappropriate.

Sometimes things we post here can be interpreted different ways . . . even when no offense was intended, stuff can come across that way.

refugee is the right term if a transplant has fled their friends and family due to the state & city they came from thede cost of living wasnt helping them live normal productive lives due to all the taxes they once had. There is many threads and posts of members who moved here without a job, moved here for the lower cost of living. The state they came from push them out due to they couldnt survive in that environment no more.

This is why people are flocking to the Lake Norman area because the cost of living may be better than what they was use to and may get more home for their money. Also the quality of life is pleasant.
I moved here to take advantage of all the transplants and make money off of them. I flipped two homes , and provided odd & end services they would need. I didnt expect to stay here this long but I like and I met my partner near here. The cost of living is alot higher especially food than where I came from a hour north . Definitely there is alot more attitude around here but my overall life is pleasant here. Plus I bought me a kayak for Mt. Island Lake to enjoy the nice summer days basking in the sun..

HMmmm...let me see...when I worked in the communications division in NYPD, the majority of the women I worked with on my shift were from NC, SC & GA. That was about 35+ women.

At Yankee Stadium, there's a souvenir concession worker that lives in Rocky Mt. She comes up to NY every homestand to work because the money's good.

Guess I actually did meet a few!

I agree...rude is rude...don't like rude people either no matter where they come from. That man that looked me in my face & made a comment about my religion the 1st time he met me, that was rude, plain & simple. BTW, his next statement was to comment on my accent & then say, "Oh you must be another Yankee." Rude yet again.

Yep, Yankees aka Northerners/NYr's are "in your face". We don't have time to waste playing games, we tell it like it is. If you make a rude remark to us, we're not going to be polite. We're going to tell you how we feel about that. No sweet talk, no subtleties, no "Bless your heart".

But the thing is . . . plain talk doesn't have to come across as rude. I love that quality about my friends - straight to the point. Of course, none of them are rude people and it wouldn't matter where they are from - they are very polite and were raised that way. And my relatives in NJ and PA are polite people, but they are very direct - wh/ is a good thing. I find it attractive to tell it like it is . . . just not "in your face," LOL. And I cannot imagine in a million years that you were at all in this guy's face - I am sure you did not deserve that comment. The man was just an idiot!!!!!

I know there are some ignorant people here cause I have crossed paths w/ them. I find it embarrassing just to know you were even talked to in that manner. I grew up around "old timers" who thought we "young people" were going to hell b/c we liked rock music, LOL. So it is that stupidity that helps create bad impressions about Southerners in general. I mean - that guy would have gotten the same answer from me - "we are not attending anywhere right now" and if he had called me a communist, I suspect he would have gotten an earful about how damned ignorant he was. So you reacted w/ a lot more decorum than I would have!!!!! That was not only rude, it was insulting, and you would have had every right to tell him you were insulted by his prejudice and ignorance. Not that it would have helped. He had his mind made up about you.

And you are so right about "who is selling the property." Yes, my own family members have sold their property (Mooresville area) much of wh/ was deeded to ancestors in the early 1800s. Developers were closing them in and they were an island of farmland amidst developments . . . so they sold out. They were elderly and so the money gives them security for the rest of their lives. But if the growth had not been here, they would have sold the land in smaller increments to other farmers . . . it is b/c of the boom we have had that so much farm land has been abandoned by families who have had their land surrounded by suburbs.

Of course, that is nothing new! That is the natural progression of things when growth takes place. But it is still sad to see the countryside turned into dots of houses where beautiful open land once was - and for many people - there is a lot of anger b/c the growth has occurred and the farms have been lost. For me, I see it as an inevitable progression and something that had to happen in order for Meck and surrounding areas to grow.

Please understand . . . I tried to explain why people feel this way, but I don't espouse many of the sentiments myself. So I hope it didn't come across that way. The truth is - I felt disappointed when I moved back here, b/c I had hoped CLT would be even BIGGER. I would like to see a much more robust uptown and I would like to see miles and miles of heavily developed (but well planned) burbs, town centers, retail, schools, etc.

My bone of contention as far as housing developments is the way things were allowed to develop. Permits should not have even been issued to some of the developers in various areas b/c the roads were not capable of handling the traffic and no provision was made for schools to service those developments. That is solely on Meck and Union Co officials who allowed poorly planned development to occur.
