I think the problem on a person to person level is just a general misunderstanding and certain long standing prejudices on both sides. Then there are a few individuals that due to their own particular personalities make matters worse. Even though the term is somewhat diluted, we really are all "Americans" and even further we are all citizens of the Human Race....
And regarding the term refugee, even if it's literal meaning can apply to Yanks moving south, when it is used in the context of today's world events, might be somewhat in appropriate.
And you are absolutely correct regarding coming down here for a life we could not afford up North. The home my wife and I built here in Mooresville, was priced at 800k, in Nassau County ( Long Island ), 975k in Bergen County ( NJ ) and 1.35m in Westchester County ( Rye NY ). We paid a little over 200k here. So yes in that cause we are all refugees coming South for a cheaper life.
In any case, the Giants are playing the Panthers on Sunday. Can anyone recommend a decent sports bar in the general area, where I can watch the game ( wearing a Giants Jersey ) and not have any issues? A little tauting is good and expected, but I mean not having any ISSUES....

Having lived in 17 different places all over this country I can honestly say that there is no difference in people anywhere. There are differences in climate, expenses, landscape, etc., but people are people.
Being born and raised in Boston I am very familiar with the 'snooty' attitude that many southerners/midwesterners refer to. Truly it's not 'snooty', it's just different. And the opposite is true - while southerners/midwesterners have an accent/drawl does not make them a 'hillbilly', 'redneck' or illiterate. Their accents are just different.
I have learned a lot having lived in so many places, and the biggest lesson to learn - for anyone - is acceptance of our differences.
I love the Carolinas. I love Tennessee and Kentucky. I love New Mexico and Utah. I love Washington and Wyoming. Home is not about neighborhoods, bakeries or such. Home is about where you are comfortable, where you can grow as a person, and where your heart is. Geography is just that - geography.
We moved to North Carolina 2 months ago. It has been a change, for sure. But never a bad one. Just some things are different - and that makes life more exciting. There's no cause for rudeness, ignorance or being nasty. We have embraced our new area, have made many new and wonderful friends, have adjusted to driving 12 miles to the store, and accepted that this is where we were meant to be.
It's always amazing to me that with all the progress we have made as a country that there are still those that want to draw a line between north and south. That war was fought many years ago and it's over. It's time we accept each others' differences and learn from one another.

Okay since I am planning on moving to Mooresville in 2 weeks to take over a business I am buying, I am only concerned at this time about a few things.. (Not moving family up until March) that will impact my clientele.
1. What the heck do I say when people start asking me where, what and how I 'worship'? I have not been in a church since a kid.. wasnt raised religious. prefer to stay that way. Just kinda shrug myself off as non denominational? The previous owner of the business made a comment about this very thing LOL, said he was asked DOZENS of times about his religious affliation and being the son of jewish father and southern baptist mother... i think he said ummmm
2. I need quick free or low cost advertising for the Mooresville area.. unfortunately the former owner wasnt really a people person and alienated clientele.. I need those clients BACK! THe shop is located East of 77 on E. Plaza Dr where they just opened up a Bottom Dollar Foods.. any ideas?
3. YES I WILL be a transplant but NOT a Northern transplant.. born and raised in GA and lived in FL for the past year Will I be acceptable (giggle) The former owner said that with my southern accent.. I was a shoo-in....
So those at the moments are my quick concerns. As I live in Mooresville and learn the town, I will learn what areas NOT to live in.. the best areas for my teenager, etc. I would appreciate any input from my friends and soon to be friends ont his forum

Hi Parti Poodle, CONGRATS on the new business & the move!!
You might want to contact Kathy Crawford at the Mooresville Tribune, she handles the classified ads & was a great help when I placed ads for our Harvest Fair. You could place a display ad that's a coupon. Make sure you state that it's under new ownership & have a expiration date on it. A 2 column width X 3 inch ad can run 52.68 per day & the newspaper has about a 6500 household circulation. You could also have one of the kids stand at the shopping area entrance on 150 with a sign. You can also post for free on Craigslist & kijiji websites.

Parti - I have only been asked once what church I attended since I moved back here six years ago. Granted, I used to be asked that more often 20 years ago. However, as a native, I can assure you that this is just a conversational device - just an attempt to find some common ground and be welcoming ("Well, come to our church!" kinda thing).
If someone asks you - "What church do you go to?" just say . . . "Gosh, I haven't really gotten to that point w/ settling in. What church do you go to?" and I promise you, the person will start telling you what nice people are in her church and simply invite you to come visit some Sunday. All you need to do is say Thank you!!! And turn the conversation to something else.
Don't explain that you are not interested in attending . . . don't explain that you enjoy Sundays for your own down time . . . don't explain a thing . . . instead, ask about the person's church cause he/she is simply looking for topics to talk about. Then change the conversation to restaurants they would recommend, where to find a great manicure - whatever.

Exactly . . . just keep it in mind - it really is not a way of judging you . . . people are trying to find common ground - something to discuss. If you were standing there w/ small children, they would be asking about what schools the kids go to . . . Other things that may take you back . . . straight out asking "where do you live" and "are you married." LOL!!! Just use some good humor (No, I am not married - know any available males?") and move on . . . people may ask all sorts of questions but I have found when I turn the tables and ask them the same questions - they are off and running about their own lives and the conversation rarely comes back to ME and MY LIFE, lol.

they were very friendly. We found a great little uniform shop on Charlotte Hwy (21?) that sells wonderful looking tailored scrubs. So I will be shopping there when I am ready to get my 'spa' type look going. She is going to be bringing her lab to me too. I enjoyed my whirlwind trip immensely. I wish I could have spent more time there
