That's true, there are tons of affordable housing in the Steele Creek and in the Belmont area, near the lake even for that price (not on the lake; near the lake). Good Luck!
There are neighborhoods in Huntersville in your price range. You would be able to go to west Charlotte easily and your wife would be able to go u/t. I wouldn't go much past exit 23 on I77, though. The commute gets worse the further north you go.
