Hee Hee. Now, Barking . . .you know I am a Southern girl . . .and raised in a rural area, as well. I can't help but get in on the reptile discussion!!!
Snake identification was not only part of my childhood - I was a Girl Scout.
We would sometimes find rat snakes (there are actually several types) in barns while grooming horses . . .
Snake identification is fascinating. At one point, as a child, I made a list of all the snakes I had seen. Never had one get aggressive w/ me until I ran across a very large timber rattler in the Brushy Mountains of Alexander County - timber rattlers are found only in certain elevations here in NC - and the Brushy Mtns. happens to be an area where you can run upon one.
If any of you are concerned about living in an area that might have snakes, just get a cat or two. Snakes and cats don't mix. I had a large King snake show up in my yard a few years ago and the neighbor's cat cornered it. Of course, king snakes are considered a welcome visitor to your landscape - they eliminate vermin. I just moved that big boy, despite the cat's protests.

Good News everyone, its a Black kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula niger) that likes to eat Copperheads. It's not a Black Racer. It's a keeper - well as much as a snake can be!

Ani, I'm not a cat person, but will get one when I move. I want a Maine Coon cat. Are they easy to get or should I get one here & bring it with me? Also, how about dogs & snakes?

But hey - if Barking has a Black kingsnake on site . . . he is very fortunate indeed - as copperheads are not welcome in my landscape.

Awwwww - Maine coons are awesome! I used to have one! A big ole boy. He could hold his own w/ anything, including a dog, LOL (not that I would want my cat getting attacked by dogs). You can find them here but you will pay a nice $$ for one. They are superb companions!
Dogs are sometimes goofy about snakes.
HOWEVER - unless you are on a farm . . . doubtful your suburban pooch will ever come across a snake. And if he/she does . . . the snake is typically going to want to get out of the way.
Also - please note - snakes are usually not aggressive except when shedding their skin. And they slow down b/f hibernation. The only poisonous snake you would likely encounter would be a copperhead . . . and in the 'burbs - that is pretty unlikely unless you have a lot of wooded property near your house.

Sounds very symbolic to me, MJ - Garden of Eden, Original Sin and all that . .. Hmmm. Maybe the Pope's visit has infiltrated your subconscious.
