We are relocating to the Charlotte area and will be working in the Presbyterian Hospital system. Our question is whether to work in Matthews (eventually the new Mint Hill Hospital) and live in Union County or work in Huntersville and live in Mooresville/iredell county. We want good schools, nice home with 1 or more acre lot ~500k range, close proximity to bike/walking trails, close to YMCA. It seems according to what we've read that Mooresville offers more of these things, but it's hard to gauge when we've not been there but once.

It's a L O N G ride from Mooresville to Matthews/Mint Hill during rush hours. If you're working the off shifts, it is still a journey but less traffic. Union County (Matthews) has some areas that may answer your needs. Unionville is lovely and fairly well situated for Matthews/Mint Hill but the nearest YMCA is the Siskey Y about 30 minutes drive. Mooresville is at least 40 miles from Matthews depending on how you travel and your starting point.

Wow, it's a real toss up - either area would give you what you are looking for - though for that much land at the price you want to pay you would be looking at not being so close to the YMCA in Matthews. So, I guess given what you are trying to accomplish I'd vote for living in Mooresville and working in Huntersville

But they didn't say they would live in Mooresville and work in Matthews/Mint Hill If they chose to live in Mooresville they plan to work in Huntersville, which is VERY doable.
