C'mon Sunny, was that really called for...?

Not everyone has a "bunker mentality" as you are implying when you purchase a fence for your yard. There's nothing wrong w/wanting some privacy IMO.

That was before I told him where I was from...end of that conversation!

Epitome of HOA BS reg's. In your case, establishing what's yours is apparently needed. We never had anyone walk through our yard (mainly because we were surrounded by 4' midget fences on two of the three sides out back!)...but I did notice some nosey neighbors form time to time staring at my house in the evening. Thank goodness those HOA rules are there to protect their right to peep!
Well I am glad we have the Berewick regulated fence to keep god knows what out, lol. The rediculous thing is we have 2 boxers and have to keep them chained up when they are outside as they jump right over the fence, so little good that did us to put in the fence. HOwever, I do believe it is somewhat of a detterent against crime. A lot of the people here who do not have fences have had their patio sets and grills stolen from their backyard. Just last week this was happening here: They have been described as black males wearing dark clothes and dark hoodies and they are going in people’s backyards and knocking on windows and scaring people. Also, all of the reported crimes for the past 30 days have been in the nighttime hours.
It seems that most people do not have fences on our street and I don't know why, I feel safer having one and I would advise the OP to put one up if they decide to buy here.

First off, they are not included in the mortgage and cannot afford one

In Waterlyn, HOA also has restrictions on fences, which for a dog that my roomate is considering, would not be high enough to keep the dog from jumping over. I believe this HOA states, it cannot be higher than 4 feet.

I agree Sunny...I'd have a natural buffer/fence before a frontier fort looking fence anyday. But in a neighborhood that also limits the amount of landscaping you're allowed to do (Berewick), that's impossible.

Yes, it's almost like some areas only allow "white picket fence" type things that are just for looks.

I prefer privacy fences but the best fence of all is a few acres of land and a forest of trees!

As a homeowner, I like the fence requirements. They help establish/maintain the look/feel of the neighborhood. I could care less aboout looking into someone else's backyard.

You're from New Orleans. Now it is coming together with the fence thing. I would want a fence with several dobermans if I lived there. Fences are basically to establish boundaries. You know the old saying, "Good fences make good neighbors"? I have lived in several states and every state in which I have lived had restrictions on fences. They had to be a certain height, and they had to be a certain type of fence. I haven't ever heard of anyone putting a fence up for security. It would have to be pretty high, strong, and barbed to keep out anyone that really wants in. Charlotte certainly isn't unique in this matter.

Yeah ur right fences, aren't great security for anyone who really wants to get in, but why make it easy for someone. If a intruder wants to break-in, I believe he will avoid crazy security things like fences, dogs, dead bolts, and alarm systems. That is just me, Maybe I am the crazy one.

No, there are some studies of criminals who said that they always looked for the easy target - whether it was someone not paying attention to surroundings or houses without fences/dogs/alarms. Make it hard for them and they will likely move on to an easier target.

Hmmm.....I would think that once a criminal made it over a privacy fence that he would feel a little more secure since no one can see him trying to kick in the back door or jimmy open a window. If he is in a subdivision with no fences to block the view the opportunities to remain out of view are fewer.
