I'd say the Bat Cave/Lake Lure/Chimney Rock area (Hickory Nut Gorge) which is around 2 hours away. The elevation is around 4,000 feet above sea level. Charlotte's elevation is around 800 feet.

From Charlotte

Take Interstate 85 South to Exit #10 (King's Mountain and Highway 74 West). Drive on 74 West for about one hour. At Exit #167, get off and turn right onto Highway 9 North. Go 14 miles to the stop sign (Lake Lure will be in front of you). Turn left at the stop sign onto Highway 64/74A West. Go 4 miles.

You can get to the parkway in 2 hours if you take 85 to 321, it takes you through Lenoir and on to Boone.

You can see on this map where the Mountain Region begins in relation to Charlotte (Mecklenburg County).

I think that almost anywhere in the NW corner of the state would be beautiful. My favorite area is anywhere between Asheville,Boone and Hickory. Just remember , it's important to have good brakes and tires when exploring the mountains. I wish you well on your trip, take plenty of film, and enjoy!

From Charlotte, go up 77 to the Galax exit (almost to Virginia). Then take 21 west towards Sparta. It goes up and down a beautiful mountain with some gorgeous views. After Sparta, just stay on that same road and it will take you to Boone via Jefferson/West Jefferson with some beautiful scenery along the way. From Charlotte it might take you 2-2.5 hours to get to Sparta.
