We have a vacation rental cabin in western North Carolina, way out in the boonies, and the roosters out there crow ALL DAY LONG. MY DH says they are lovelorn ...

Pet goats also come to visit when we're there, and our dogs are so scared of them they hide behind us. Great, so nice to know the dogs would defend us if need be.

Here is the thing - they have probably had this rooster for a while and here I come in, not happy to hear it. There was no way for me to know it did it's morning sound at first light many, many times an hour as I never heard the blasted thing when I visited the property before renting it for a year.

Is there anything that can be done? They are not part of the homeowners association or this development so are there any noise pollution laws in this area or the state?

I do really feel bad moaning about it.... they were here first.. I come in... don't like it...moan moan moan.... but you know, there must be other people annoyed with it? Maybe I am just not used to country sounds!

Hi Brit, can I make a suggestion? Get a sound machine and sleep with it near your head. We have an awesome one from Sharper Image, but you can get them in other places. Ours has a wide variety of soothing sounds, and also just plain "white noise" you can choose from. It really does block out anything going on outside the house. Before we did this our neighbors dogs would wake us up early every morning when she left for work (at 5:A.M.!!) - now we never hear them - problem solved

I second the suggestion to sleep with white noise, if you can...I am easily disturbed by noise such as cars, music, dogs barking, while I sleep but also, I can't sleep in silence either. Silence is deafening! I get my best sleep with really loud air cleaners, oscillating fans, air conditioners, waterfalls, etc. I realize some people don't like white noise, as my husband can't sleep with the air cleaner on, he wants complete silence.

To the OP, I wouldn't complain because there's nothing you can do about it. I know this sucks...I feel for you..everyone should be completely comfortable at home and especially during the night and early morning.

And worst, my father in law has a rooster and some hens, and that darn rooster crows not only in the morning, but whever he's feeling randy, which is almost all day. He also crows whenever something invades his territory- it's like he's macho. He crows whenever anyone drives up. I always think of Renee Zellweger's character in the movie Cold Mountain, when she moves in to help Nicole Kidman's character, and she has a mean rooster. Renee's character Ruby snaps his neck and says "Let's put 'im in a pot!" (NOt only is my FIL's rooster loud all day but he tries to attack people all the time with his spurs)

My former condo had really bad footfall noise. I tried everything. Nothing was as effective as a nice strong noisy, cheap fan. It seems to drown out everything even screams from fowl. Thought about doing a driveby?

We live in rural Union County after having moved from an area in NJ that was classified rural and occasionally we would hear a rooster or cows lowing or horses. Here our local rooster tunes up around 4 AM and carries on endlessly. A pellet gun in not an option. For a while he and his cronies moved across the road and roosted in a tree outside our bedroom window. then one of the hens got hit by a car and they returned to their usual haunts. We also hear cows from a half mile or more away. It can be pretty peaceful. But, if you want NOISE, try tree frogs. They scream from dusk until around 11 PM - a loud, screeching sound not unlike fingernails on a blackboard.

Have you asked him not to be such a ****? (heehee, we'll see how long that lasts before I get a warning or the thread gets deleted)

When I was a sophomore in high school we did a science project on tiny newborn roosters. We paired up and one fed its rooster a harmless saline solution and the other fed theirs a steroid solution and we had to track the progress and determine which was eating which. well at the end of the project the teacher said he was going to feed the roosters to his boa unless we wanted to buy ours for like $2. I went home and asked my mom if I could have a rooster and to my surprise she said absolutely not. so the next day I bought it anyways and brought it home. she couldn't resist, as this cute little pumped-up steroid injected rooster became part of the family. well as the summer went by, everyone thought us having a rooster was hilarious, except for our neighbors who didn't quite enjoy the thing caulk-a-doodle-doo-ing every morning at 5am. and I mean every morning. one neighbor finally broke down and begged us to do something about it. so we found a farm who promised not to kill the thing and we gave it to them. I miss that little bugger. I had a pic but it's on my old pc that crashed. This was in a pretty dense neighborhood in NJ, so our neighbors had a right to say something. Not sure what you can do about it around here though.

There are certain Saturday mornings when the call of the rooster would be pleasureable compared to the neighbors here in the subdivison that crank up their Harley's in the driveway and let them idle for 5 - 10 minutes while they get all dressed up in their weekend warrior costumes to go cruising. Nothing like loud pipes resonating off the houses and killing a sounds sleep.
