Last year, I had my car inspected in May when I transferred my driver's license and registration from Virginia to NC.

May is fast approaching, and I know it's almost time to have the car inspected again.

Does the DMV mail you anything to renew your registration, or can you do this online? Do you have to take that paperwork (if any) with you when you have your car re-inspected?

Since I did everything on the same day last year, I had a folder full of info with me (better safe than sorry when it comes to DMV, right?). I don't know exactly what is required of me this time around -- can anyone shed some light?

Thank you!

NC DMV will send you a registration renewal notice. You can either pay it by snail mail or online. If your registration expires in May, you will have until 6/15 to get your new registration (and accompanying sticker onto your plate.)

Your inspection sticker (on the lower driver's side of the front windshield) will be punched out for the expiration month. You should have your car re-inspected before the last day of that month. They will ask to see your registration card at inspection. There is no grace period for inspection. If you had your car inspected in May, you will have until 5/31 to have it inspected.

HTH.

Do not COUNT on them mailing you something.....coming from CT where we renewed registrations something like every 4 yrs.....we didn't realize (our fault) that it was done every year here.....DH's registration was something like 7 mos overdue when he got pulled over! Luckily mine was just about to expire. Neither one of us got anything in the mail. We were able to do it online as stated above and the new sticker came within 48 hrs.

Don't forget to pay the county taxes on your vehicle! I found out the hard way that you won't receive a thing in the mail if these are neglected...

They don't mail you a bill for your county taxes? How do you know how much to pay, and when?

They don't do stickers on the windshield any longer. Now you just get the vehicle inspected, the inspection station electronically files it immediately and you are good with the state to get a new sticker either online or in person. They say to allow 10 days for online but mine have never taken longer than 5. YOU MUST GET THE INSPECTION FIRST.

You are correct that NC doesn't do stickers anymore but just to let you know that post was from 2008.
