You would spend almost an extra $250 just on gas from University City a month...not even including parking for their Uptown job. Parking isn't free Uptown.

Uptown isn't for everyone...you are right...but if the OP is single...Uptown is full of single professionals. We can take the Gold Rush trolley to midtown and walk to the Greenway (Little Sugar Creek Greenway).

You can walk to work from anywhere Uptown in 10 minutes maximum.

Oh don't get me wrong, I agree, I really like uptown. I walk to most places, I crack up when people drive the few blocks to other places. Parking isn't too bad, and actually many companies pay or re-imburse you.

Let me clarify the cost though, I paid $920 a month for a 2/2 with garage in a nice place. A comparible place in/near 4th Ward is $1600. Thats $600 a month more. Even with Gas skyrocketing. $4 a gallon, 20MPG 30 miles Round trip, $6 day, lets round up to $150 a week for gas. That extra $450 a month is significant. There are some cheaper places, yes, but I was doing comparables as best a possible. Personally if I could choose yes, Uptown, but you have to be able to afford it. Though for $930 a mo, you can get a 650ft Studio!

I work from home now, but is gas that expensive??

Let's see. Approx 10 miles each way. = 20 milesperday/20 milespergallon ~ 4.00 a day * 5days a week = 20.00 /week or 80.00 per month. You could round up and make it 100.00 per month on gas + if you are willing to park and walk, I believe I've seen monthly parking for 90+ a month.

I still think you would come out ahead by saving on your rent and not living uptown. No complaints about Uptown, but it probably will depend on the type of lifestyle you are looking for.

Whtyewolfe read my mind on the gas.

Basically, as you can see from the thread, most of us happen to like our neighborhoods. Choose what makes you happy.

I just bought a home in Highland Creek with the same zip code. It must be a big area?

The 28269 area is great, we are so centrally located it makes running errands very convenient. We've lived here almost 10 years, and absolutely love it. I can get to parking at a Panthers game in 15 minutes (Graham St), Jury Duty takes longer due to the hours, grocery stores and drug stores to my left and my right, malls, gas stations, restaurants. The commute just depends on your hours, if the business is flexible, I'd go with earlier hours, leave before 7:00am. Traffic on Prosperity Church Road/Mallard Creek Church Rd can get backed up - coming and going - many business parks along this route. Anywhere you go there is crime, you really are safe nowhere, it's just the sad times that we live in now. There was crime long ago, but with the media outlets we have today EVERYTHING gets reported, so we all hear it more. Don't forget about the CATS bus system. I do know the parking lot on Mallard Creek Road is overflowing. I'm not sure about the cost, and if that is something you would consider, some people are bus riders, some are not; there may be van pools also. Back to apartments, make sure you ask about the college students, this is a college area, and some apartments have alot of students living there. You may even want to consider purchasing (or renting) a townhouse, there are some around here, not that many though. There are some nice looking apartments next to Concord Mills (just inside Cabarrus County) off Derita Road. A Bloom grocery store is going up across the street from there. Good Luck!!

I should have stated about $250 a month for Gas & Parking...not to get off topic.

Don't forget the cost of tires, oil, wear and tear and appreciation. Of course, there are many public transportation options to get downtown from that area. So, I think university is definitely the better bargain compared to uptown.
