When I lived in Charlotte, Hawthorne's was my favorite pizza joint. Their "New Yorker" pie is very close to the real thing, when it is made right. It seems like the quality goes down on weekends, but even their not-up-to-par stuff is better than the best of most pizza places I have encountered in Charlotte.
Note that I am referring to the 7th street location.

Please do a search on Hawthornes. I and others have done some reviews on the place.
My quickie review...best New York style pizza in town.

been going there for a couple years. only place in town to get a good pizza. they just opened on carmel road and the quality is as good as the original location.

I tried it shortly after they opened the Mallard Creek one up and thought it was bad. The crust was terrible. Apparently I need to give it another shot since it's getting rave reviews. I usually give pizza joints 2 or 3 chances anyway.
