Dunroven,I hate to contradict you, but to have Hospice you DO have to be terminal. The Federal Government states that someone can only have Hospice if their diagnosis from a terminal disease is six months or less. Anyone (or any company) that tells you differently is either sorely mistaken or deliberately misleading you. This is part of the reason that Medicare is revamping the Hospice benefit...too many Hospices are taking advantage of the system. It is also a reason why South Carolina needs a Certificate of Need program. Right now, anyone can throw up a shingle and call themselves a Hospice. If your mom is under the Hospice I think she is, you may want to contact DHEC here in SC and report them...I have on several occasions. BTW, I have been a certified Hospice RN for twelve years. Be careful !

I apologize for being late responding to this email. My mother is in deed under hospice. They will keep anyone for three years as long as their health is going down. My mother has now stablized as regards Hospice and is no longer offered unless mother begins to lose abilities again.

Thank you for your advice. I take everything seriously since the situation warrants a careful review.

Take care

Dunroven

These are not in south Charlotte, but a friend's mother has been in Wilora Lake Lodge for several years. It is actually near Eastland Mall which might scare you off, but they have had a very good experience there with her mother. They have lots of activities and various levels of care.

Another small assisted living that another friend's mother was in was the Little Flower on Lawyer's Road. It always seemed very caring and the people were very nice. It's small and homey, not so instituitional.

There is a business that we used to find assisted living for our mother. It's free of charge. The company is national and is paid by the assisted living provider. They will interview you on the phone and make appointments for you at the various places.

Check out "A Place for Mom."
It has a web page. Senior Care, Assisted Living, Nursing Homes | A Place for Mom

It was so helpful to us. We had 4 appointments at 4 different locales. We ate lunch at 2 of them because the business wants to show you how good their food is. Also, if this is for your mother, check to see if there is an in-house beauty salon.

Even though it says "A Place for Mom" it caters to all folks. A year later mother was diagnosed with dementia and the facilty has a "Memory Care" unit. Mother is now in that unit and loves it. She simply changed rooms. : )

I second using the "A Place for Mom" service, as I went through them to locate the AL facility where my wife currently resides. They also have some details about other options, such as area group homes or even some people who open up their homes and provide room and board that may be a better fit.
