Concord and Cabarrus county showed its hand when other counties started giving him land to move the track and Cabarrus went off whining about it wasn't fair that other counties were trying to win him over before they (Cabarrus) were finished trying to negotiate. Boo Hoo.
After that Smith could have done whatever he wanted and he knew it. You're lucky they didn't change the name to Bruton Smith County

Bruton did nothing wrong here. He owned the land to build a race track, there was no zoning issue stopping him. Homeowners who decided to buy near a race track complained about the noise it will cause, go figure a race track making noise. To accomodate his wishes to build another race track he searched other options such as moving the track and I can understand why he would want to keep it all together. Cabarrus/Concord wanted the revenue he has attracted with the race track he has put there long before the houses being built were even thought of, as a matter of face it was his track and the revenue it created that made these developments and businesses come about. So what is it that Bruton is all to blame, business is business and you have to do what you have to do to succeed. Don't take it personally, I am sure any business person would have to agree......

^^^^^I couldn't agree more. This situation reminds me of the people who over bought and took out mortgages that they knew they wouldn't be able to afford on an ARM and than when crunch time comes, they cry to the government to bail them out. If you don't like noise than DON'T MOVE NEXT TO A RACE PARK PEOPLE! Should I move next to CLT and than start a campaign to have the airport shut down because it's too noisy? It is sad that this is the society that we have become.
I do agree that the street name change is a bit overboard but like others mentioned, that was the Mayors move. They just starting freaking when other Counties were welcoming him with open arms.

I agree and the county would have been totally INSANE to have let him leave.
Does anyone have access to a budget prior to that race track being built? Or how about - tax revenue sources pre-race track? Or - taxes raised b/c of retail sales resulting from businesses developed post-race track?
It would tell quite a tale!!!!!

The speedway is not only a big moneymaker for Concord. According to the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, each of the NASCAR Sprint Cup events held at LMS brings $100 million into the Charlotte economy, meaning Charlotte gets at least $300 million a year from speedway events.

It's a big deal for the local economy. Big, big, big. Did I say - BIG?
7 oh 4 - I know you are thinking ole Bruton played everyone but honestly - the region needs the cash his enterprise brings in. So if that means we should pucker up and play kissy-poo . . . it ain't that bad. Not in the big scheme of things. I love the tax revenue . . . helps keep my property taxes from going up. Or anyway - that is the illusion I cling to, Hee Hee.

With all the factories closing and all the job losses in Cabarrus County, they couldn't afford to lose the race track. Same thing with the Research Campus - Cabarrus needs both the track and the Research Campus to keep moving foward.
