NYC 2 Charlotte - East Park District
Relocating from NYC and recently got hired by the Parks Departments. I will be working in the East Park District around the Methodist Home Rec Center Area (3200 Shamrock Drive). From what I hear and gathered, it's located in a "rough" neighboorhood? can anyone confirm this or give me an honest opinion.
Also, I'm looking for apartment for the first couple of months. I definitely dont want to stay in the "hood" but do want to be close to my job. Me and my Wife are pretty much reserved and prefer a quiet community, we have a small dog who she swears is real person and we dont have any kids. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance

Shamrock is a little rough, but you can stay anywhere from South End/uptown to the northern burbs and you won't be far off (Huntersville, Concord).

The shamrock area is not the greatest, but it is not the worst either. If you are from NYC I'm sure it is nothing you have not seen before. The area is slowley improving with trendy neighborhoods like NoDa. You are also near the back end of Plaza-Midwood (another trendy historic area). If you are looking for an apartment nearby this area then I would check out The Cavalier/Doral apartments. It's 15 minutes away from Shamrock and very dog friendly. I have a couple of friends that live there and they really like it.

I am pretty sure they are fixing to tear down the Cavalier/Doral apartments in the near future. Back to the drawing board!
GOOD LUCK!

I was told recently from an inside source that they are tearing down the Doral side but not the Cavalier side. Wherever Nick from NYC chooses to live, just stay away from those apartments near shamrock and the plaza. Yuuck! I would not live there unless I was constantly packing a gun.

7 oh 4 is there any particular reason why they are tearing down those apartments? looked decent online, but then again pictures can sometimes tell a lie.

Because they are in what our mayor calls the corridor of crap. We tear down almost everything here!

Aren't the Doral apartments prone to flooding? I thought that was the reason they were being torn down, whenever they get aorund to it.
I've lived in the Shamrock, Plaza, NoDa area now for about 10 years. While it is not the best place to be, it certainly has improved the past few years. Don't come in expecting anything like Ballantyne or Piper Glen. This area is definately not either of those.
Do expect to hear sirens and hear about crime. I'm not going to tell you it's the safest area in Charlotte, when it is clearly not. If you get in the right area, you'll be fine. Just make sure you check out where you try to rent or buy beforehand. Areas tend to go from nice to shady within 2 or 3 houses or a block.
Just do your homework and you'll be fine. And living in Concord/Harrisburg will not provide the shortest commute. Not too bad, but definately not speedy.
