What is this kind of grass on my lawn: it grows in big tufts and shoots out hard thick stalks horizontally. The hard stalks look like wheat (but they grow sideways flat near the ground). I have to clip the hard stalks with my clippers because they grow so flat that my lawn mower doesn't cut them.

What kind of grass is this? Any advice about how to live with it?

Thanks!

MC

My guess would be crabgrass. If you can post a picture, it makes identifying it easier.

No, it's not crabgrass (I'm looking at pics of crabgrass now). Not Johnson. Not Bermuda, from what I can tell. (Looking at pics.)

What I got is nice thick grass, in tufts, shooting out hard stalks sideways.

I'll try to get a picture. (How do I post pictures? I guess I'll find out!)

Stay tuned.

HEY! Yeah! I think that's it!

It's a weed? Then, like, half my lawn is a big weed farm. ...sigh.

It looks ok, though, green and nice; thick. But it just sends out these shoots that the lawnmower misses. I end up walking around with hand-clippers and snipping the stalks. (Which I leave on the lawn, returning nitrogen to the soil or something.)

If I get rid of these tufty things on my lawn, I'll have no lawn left.

So, I guess this is one weed I'm keeping!

Thanks for posting that pic.

I'll do some more research.

MC

If it was that kind of weed, I'd own this board... instead of just being a lowly poster...

Anyway: Dallisgrass Management Guidelines--UC IPM

Ta-da! Dallisgrass.

I'm not gonna bother much with it.

At least it's not crabgrass.
