Parking at Charlotte Amtrak Station (Tryon: 2010, crime, neighborhood)

We are considering taking the train (instead of flying or driving) for our vacation this year. From what we've read online, however, the Charlotte Amtrak station is not in the best part of town. How safe is it to leave your car there for days while on a trip? Are there any other options? (We live 20 miles from downtown, so taking a taxi would be pricey.)

Taking a taxi probably wouldn't be as pricey in the long run as parking your car in that neighborhood overnight.

It appears there's only been one actual auto theft in that block of Tryon in the past 2 1/2 years, and 6 reported larcenies from autos, the last one was in November. the neighborhood is rough, but I think the Amtrak station, since it has activity 24 hours a day, discourages too much crime in that block. There has been only 1 reported incident in that block in the past 6 months. I would leave my 96 Ranger overnight, only because I know I have nothing they would want to steal. But if you have a nice car, I wouldn't do it.

I agree. I don't like driving through that neighborhood in the daytime. I can't imagine leaving my car at the station.

Thanks, everyone. We really appreciate the responses. Unfortunately,we may be stuck leaving our car in the lot. Taxi fares are outrageous ($45 to/from, so $90 total), we don't really have anyone to drop us off, and taking a bus would be even more complicated as we'd still have to leave our car by the bus stop, deal with managing all our luggage, etc. Guess we'll just have to take our older car and chance it

Just try to park closer to the building and under a lamp post if you can.

I would not park there. Have friends drop you off!

That will all be changing when they move Amtrak to the new Gateway Train Station that will link up with Light Rail & Greyhoud too. Very smart move for Charlotte. It is going where the new current bus station is on W. Trade St. where the train tracks are beside of Gateway Village.
