Salisbury is the 1/2 ways point to Winston-Salem from Charlotte off of I-85. 45 minutes to either city. Very nice small city. Still alot of rural areas that are close to conveniences.
Statesville is the 1/2 ways point between Winston-Salem and Charlotte off of I-77/I-40. Also very nice small city with still some rural areas and lots of conveniences. 45 minutes to either city.
Mooresville - Congested and aweful traffic.
Concord/Harrisburg is basically Charlotte. Still some rural areas (not many) with moderate plus traffic.
GOOD LUCK!

Lexington is great middle of the road but depending your age and if you have teenage kids if you will like this area or not or single.
Great price of homes and land for your $$.
Excellent down home southern hospitality but limited shopping unless you dont mind going to Winston (about 25 min commute with little traffic. 30 minutes to Greensboro, 50 minutes to Charlotte roll of dice of if traffic is heavy or not
Rural living can be had but life needs are just down the road. YOu can find large rural or just a few acres.
I hated this area as teen and young adult but looking back on the area I see why Mom choose that area. Great area to raise a family in a very safe enviroment.
There is alot of huge 1920's homes for sale every time I go up there and it kills me that I have not won the lottery because I have been in many of them and things like the bedrooms with fireplaces are huge in size.
Salisbury is ok as well but for someone who does not know the area I would suggest a rural location in this area and away from Spencer. Focus on the other end.
They both have very cute historic downtowns. Most people who commute from Salisbury either work in Winston or Charlotte .
I would not commute on a daily basis from Lexington however. The residents tend to either commute to Winston or Greensboro.
Beauty about living in the triad a traffic jam is 3 cars waiting on a light.
My mom lives in Lexington and she had me do some errands for her and it was like about five things and I was done in a hour or less. I would be lucky to just get to point A in fifteen minutes here in the Charlotte area due to either traffic lights or traffic.
Those both are great middle of the state small towns.
Salisbury has little more modern options in my opinion .
Lexington is like going somewhere that time has forgot.
Overall they both offer pretty close the same quality of life.

both of them are near High Rock Lake.
I have an inflatable kayak and I will not put it in that lake. However I bet kayaking in the county next door in Davie along the Yadkin River probably would be fun.
High Rock Lake is a fun lake you can 4x4 ride on some sides, hunt, and on some parts of the side it has public swimming holes; mix use of homes and larger lake size homes and lots than you will find at many of the other lakes.
However it is one of the type of lakes you want to know a local who knows how to navigate that lake or have a depth finder due to various depth levels and tree stumps.
Both cities will have your basic needs to get by and ok in life. I kinda miss that area due to people tend to get to know you by first name when you enter their buisness but some will chat your ear off lol.
