Is the highway use tax based on the number of miles traveled each year and in addition to the tax paid for plates based on the value of my car? Is the hut paid only once if not based on miles traveled? Is there a web site to go to that shows the value of cars and their tax amount?

The HUT is a one-time state registration tax based on assessed value. However, most newcomers will be taxed $150 or less to register their out of state vehicles when moving into the state regardless of present value. NC has no sales tax on motor vehicle purchases.

Charlotte has an additional $30 car tax on top of the property taxes.
