Macy's will establish a 1.4 million-square-foot e-commerce fulfillment center in the town of China Grove. The company expects to employ nearly 2,800 workers at the location and be operational in 2024.

Fulfillment center is focused on online orders and returns so they don't need stores nearby technically to be able to deliver nationwide. Online is the fastest growing channel at Macy's.. +36% YoY and 12% QoQ to 37% of their total sales. They are very focused on trying to build a solid omni-channel strategy.

While Belk has more stores in the Southeast... I am concerned for their digital channel and the long term viability of Belk if they can't build a successful omni-channel strategy to meet customer demand for mobile + web + in store shopping. Belk has a long way to go at only around ~15% online sales.

Belk is closing their distribution center in Union County, SC and consolidating fulfillment operations at its Blythewood, SC facility near Columbia. They have struggled a bit in recent years since the sale by the founding Belk family and emerging from bankruptcy. But they are a popular hometown brand in the Carolinas, so hopefully they can rebound.

Macy's still has stores at Northlake and SouthPark, although they closed Carolina Place a few years ago. Prior to Macys, in NC the predecessors were Thalhimer's and Hechts. In SC and Georgia, they were Rich's and Davison's.
