Now I know that this proposed tax increase would only raise my property taxes around $30 a year, however, as a homeowner I am tired of the notion to raise property taxes for this and that. Why are homeowners always stuck with the bill. I say raise sales tax that way EVERYONE is contributing to fighting crime, not just homeowners. I'm tired of renters always being in the free and clear when it comes to these things. What do you think?
renters are not in the clear. Landlords will still have to pay property taxes just like everyone else except they pass it on in the rent or apartment fees.

That property tax bill gets included in the cost of the rent, it's just split out over however many apartments. Renters are in no way "free and clear" when it comes to property taxes.
Certainly they shouldn't face a property tax bill the same size as a homeowner's, right? It's not like a renter owns his/her property. Not to mention if I don't live in, or anywhere near your town, I don't think I should have to pay a sales tax increase just to subsidize your fight against crime.
How about decreasing the size of city government and using those funds to subsidize a fight against crime?
Sales tax. Let the people that are spending stolen money pay the tax.
Yeah, that is also what I was getting at but was not brazen enough to say it. I was not just referring to apartments, there are a lot of people that rent homes too, and while I know it has to come from somewhere, ie, the current owner of the house who is renting or the tenant, it seems as though Charlotte's answer to everything is, let the homeowners pay for it. Which is really annoying after a while. We need more schools, let the homeowners pay for that too, while the renters get off free and clear, again. How about we make the builders pay for the schools when they want to build a subdivision, and increase sales tax to fight crime. Us homeowners are taxed enough. Maybe I'm a little sour as we own two homes, that means double the taxes, and everytime I turn around the taxes are going up for this or that.

Charlotte does not have the authority to raise taxes on cigarettes or alcohol it has to be approved by the state and that is highly unlikely except the state plans to raise those taxes for state programs.
IMO, I think renters and property owners should pay the same amount. I don't think the size or value of your home (if you even are a property owner) should dictate how much you pay out of your pocket to prevent crime. I know that opens a whole can of worms in regards to all things taxes pay for but thats another topic entirely.
Crime affects everyone and has little to do with whether you rent or own. Actually, change that, I would bet that apartments have statiscally more crime per household.
