Moving to Charlotte - Looking for neighborhood
We may be relocating to the Charlotte area this summer. It is very confusing trying to figure out what area to start looking into...some important things for us:
1) good schools - we have 3 kids ages 1-9
2) good family neighborhood - we want our kids to play outside w/ kids ride bikes, etc.....
3) we would love a lake community
4) short commute from south Charlotte area
5) $500,000-$600,000 range
6) we are trying to stay away from McMansions, subdivisions w/ no trees etc - we live in one now & it is not for us.....(but the above critia is more important)
ANY SUGGESTIONS OF AREAS TO START RESEARCHING?????? THANKS!

If you will be working in S. CLT, then why not settle in S. CLT?
You will not find a McMansion in your price range. At least, not what I think most people consider a McMansion.
If you want to live near a lake and commute back to S. CLT, then consider Tega Cay . . . or maybe the Palisades . . .

You must check out Tega Cay, just over the state line It is on a beautiful lake (Lake Wylie) and schools are excellent. In your price range you will find some nice homes

South Charlotte is a great place to live or work. I agree with the previous post - but there is one lake everyone tends to forget about that would be a easy commute to S. Charlotte. That would be the Mountain Isle Harbor neighborhood - I have friends that live there - it is a family friendly area with beautiful homes. Moderator cut: soliciting not permitted

Check out schools on GreatSchools.net for any area you are looking at. You can check parents' ratings/comments, state ratings, scores on standard tests, and any number of other facts. Very useful info!

The Overlook neighborhood is a beautiful lake side, Mountain Island Lake, community. There are waterfront and off water homes. It is located near 485 (so commute would be an easy 20 min to S. Char). There are two parks, a soccer field, tennis courts, two playgrounds and a pool. Lots and lots of kids! A very active swimteam etc. Because it is located next to a protected lake, there are lots of trees. Home prices are 390+. Feel free to contact me with any questions. I live in the neighborhood and my children go to Mountain Island Elemtary- a great school.

Elizabeth and Dilworth. Best in your price range with good schools and a close in commute. There is no lake living that would give you all three of those. Though like I said, if you can go longer on the commute you can't beat Tega Cay in my book

If you are interested in the best schools in Charlotte and urban (close to downtown), community, neighborhood living, I agree with the suggestions of Dilworth and Elizabeth. You may also want to consider Myers Park if you can find something in the range that is the size you want. I would suggest finding a broker that knows Charlotte center city neighborhoods if you want to avoid McMansions. Elizabeth (where I live), Dilworth, and Myers Park (Eastover also would be great but is much more $$$) are all historic neighborhoods with great schools, beautiful older homes (1920s+), and wonderful communities to live in. Since you will be working in South Charlotte, Southpark and the surrounding areas would be good as well. Good luck and welcome!!

This is a great website about "Charlotte's only Lake." There is info about the area and neighborhoods, and it is only 10 miles from downtown Charlotte.
No lake living? Check this out:
