Donating clothing
Does anyone have any ideas of where to donate clothing other than GoodWill...I have taken so much stuff to them and it all gets dumped into a big bin for resale, I would love to know of somewhere that the clothes will get used by someone who can't make it to Good Will, like a shelter or something like that. Years ago I donated bags of clothing to a shelter and it was great to see that they went to people who really needed them, instead of some middle class bargain hunter.

I don't have a problem with Goodwill though. The money they raise supports good causes too.

I posted a listing for some professional business women's clothing on Freecycle and had several calls. I ended up giving the clothes to a woman who was helping some previously-battered women find jobs.
The best thing about Freecycle is you know the taker wants what you have. You don't get that with Goodwill, but Goodwill's much more convenient.

I second Crisis Assistance. They give the clothes to people who need rather than sell in a store. They also take household items and such.

Not sure if they are in Charlotte, but Families Helping Families is a national organization helping families in need. They need clothing, furniture, kitchen equipment, etc. for people who have had fires, storm/flood damage, stuff stolen, lost jobs, etc. They took all of my mother's furniture that we didn't want and all the pots, pans, etc. from the kitchen.

I know CRISIS had special rules about when they take donations. Check the rules before you go there, I think the area is kind rough where they are located.
Many churhes take clothes too, you can ask around. Most of the members will be happy to take them for you. If you want tax receipts make sure you mention that upfront.
Saint Michaels in Gastonia has a thrift store and they might pick stuff up.

I was disappointed in Goodwill. When I re-did my daughters bedroom last weekend, we have lots of clothes, toys, etc to donate. Also being donated was her barely used Twin bed, complete with headboard, frame, and bagged mattress/boxspring.
Well, as it turns out, Goodwill does not take mattresses/boxsprings (even in the great shape these were in). So, I had to bring this truckload of donations to the Salvation Army location in Cornelius. They gladly took everything we offered.
So, I was a little disappointed in Goodwill, but I appreciate they have their policies.
