Default EC Programs at Selwyn/AG???

Hi,

We are likely moving to Charlotte this summer (very sudden decision) and will be in the Selwyn/AG school district. I have been told that both are very good schools but I have a concern about the Exceptional Childrens programs. We have a rising 4th grader who has been in private schools and has been diagnosed with ADHD and has social/emotional immaturity. Private school is not likely an option for next year because of the lateness of our decision and so I am seeking any feedback at all from anyone who has kids who are in, or have been through, the EC programs at Selwyn and AG. Was the IEP process satisfactory (we have never done one and I hear they can be confusing)? Do the schools have good resources for ADHD kids? Is the administration responsive to concerns? Any feedback at all would be welcome. Thank you!

Since you're not coming WITH a current IEP there will need to be testing done by the local schools before they will even consider placement.....I would call the school AS SOON as you have an address....even if you haven't closed on the house yet, as long as you have a closing date set. Get in touch with the school itself or the county EC program. (I'm in Union County or I'd give you numbers). Explain your situation, and WHY you're not coming with an IEP already. Hopefully they'll get things done over the summer and not place your child in a regular class and backpeddal once they figure things out.

I did this last year, even though I was coming with my daughter's IEP, since she has significant needs. They spent many hours during summer doing testing (at my home) as well as implementing a summer program with a spec ed teacher for my daughter. Still not happy completely with her situation, but she missed more than half the year this year so we're going to get a "do over" and repeat 6th grade, maybe we'll get it right next time around!
