What Social Services are available in CLT?
There is another thread going on right now with a woman in trouble. It brought to mind the following question: What is avaialble for homeless, sick, desitute people in the city of Charlotte. If one was to ask me --where do I find shelter tonite?--how would I answer?
As far as sickness and medical problems I would assume one would enter into to an emergency room of a hospital and the regulations of Medicare apply? Including people without documentation?

If I needed to help someone tonite, I would suggest the Salvation Army and Catholic Services for starters. They may not be able to help, but they may be able to suggest other resources. I tend to always turn to churches when there is an emergency.
As for medical, yes, federal law mandates that anyone presenting at an Emergency Dept must be treated, regardless of ability to pay, and regardless of citizenry/ status. Medicaid is a program one must be enrolled for and one must qualify for under the guidelines. There are medical social workers at hospitals who can guide a person to what resources are available to assist them w/ their healthcare needs.
Then there is the traditional subsistence program . . . but that involves red tape and time to get enrolled (as you know) . . . so not a solution for immediate help.

I have no idea - but would really like to know. I volunteer with a woman's shelter in Monroe and know how to advise people that are in a terrible situation with a spouse and may or may not have children.
I have been corresponding with the woman that you are speaking of and are trying to find something for her - but as she has stated - she would be terrified of a shelter.
Please someone with a background/experience with this - PLEASE HELP !!!!!

whether she is "terrified" of a shelter or not--it may be her only alternative.Hate to cut to the chase but it is what it is. If that is availab le it's a whole lot better than sleeping on a bus or park bench.
Now, I really hope, I don't hear from a whole lot of people "how cruel" without a viable suggestion.

Trying . . .but at this time of day . . . just wish we had gotten the request six hours ago. Just not easy to put anything together at 8:30 pm.
No, John, I don't think you are heartless. It is what it is. There just may not be that many choices at 8:30 pm on a Thurs evening. And the cruel facts are - we are overloaded w/ requests here in this area for emergency assistance and shelter right now. Everything is stretched. There may be nothing available for tonite no matter who we call.

The Urban Ministry Center uptown is the local homeless center. They have beds and provide meals. As for medical services, you are right. The Emergency Room is probably the place to go.

That is where I always turn first. If I found myself stranded in a city, I would get myself to a priest/parish house/church. Immediately. But that is just me.
