We discussed this at our last community watch meeting. Yes, this is a new trend and it is spreading fast.

If thugs can steal gas that costs $4/gallon and sell it for $3/gallon ... and they can do it virtually without fear of getting caught ... well, it doesn't take a genius to see what our big summer crime wave is going to be.

Edit: I didn't actually read the article before posting. The big trend is not going to be stealing from stations, but actually siphoning gas out of cars and trucks. Think of all the industrial parks where trucks are just parked unsecured with no surveillance whatsoever.

On a serious note, you're right. Thats why I bought a locking gas cap 5 years ago. Sure its not going to stop the truly diligent, but hopefully it will deter.

Does auto insurance cover the theft of gas?

Gas syphening is nothing new even when it was $1.41

Maybe I just don't think like a criminal, but I don't understand what happened in that article...

Was the station closed? Don't places without computerized pumps have locks/shutoffs on them for when they're closed? Did they not have one of those "pay at the pump before fueling" things? Was there just a lazy clerk who didn't notice all the people driving up and refueling without paying? I don't get it.

I think if prices keep rising, we're going to end up going back to being like OR and NJ where you're not allowed to pump your own gas any more...

And yeah, a locking gas cap is probably a good idea.

Not new, but not nearly as widespread as it is going to be.

If you don't have a locking gas cap, get one. If you don't have motion sensor lights in your driveway, install them. If you don't have a driveway and have to park in the street ... hmm ... move?

it so easy to steal gas out of shed though or syphen a SUV since they have double the gas tank size of a normal car.
