A world class city is a city that plays a huge role in the economics of the world. Charlotte does. It is a city that is known around the world. It is. Charlotte is on the road to being a super city. Many people, especially those that have not travelled internationally, can't see this. Charlotte will never be a NYC or a Chicago, but it will be a internationally known business center. It draws international companies at a pace that is beyond many other larger American cities. So, it is a world class city. If these reasons don't qualify, what is a world class city? I thing that the whole issue is relative. There needs to be an international scale to measure such an issue. As far as world class cities, Nashville and Memphis are probably as popular with tourist as Chicago. Does that make Nashville or Memphis a world class city? Probably not because of the business factor on which Charlotte has a grip. Again, it is all relative and I need another beer.

I have since decided - who the heck cares if CLT is cosmopolitan, not cosmopolitan, world class or not . . . whatever. I am like some of the other posters - yes, there are things that would make the city more fun, more sophisticated, whatever . . . but it is a darn good place to live right now . . . so why try to put a label on it.
Just my thoughts.

i think minor league baseball uptown is a big mistake. minor league baseball in your city center is something for a mid sized city like greensboro not a major city like charlotte. also, the land in that area is way to valuable for something like minor league baseball. we will probably get the marlins in a decade or so anyways so we might as well wait.

Well, one of our citizens did his best to get the city to re-consider . . .and that got nowhere. I totally agree - we need a major league team and the stadium to support it. Bad move on city council's part.

I'm moving to Charlotte. It's a nice city and offers great value for the money, but let's not kid ourselves -- it's missing a lot. I am dismayed that with all of the money that the banks have (or had), that they did not go on a museum buying spree and purchase at least one work by the various classic masters and by great modern artists and then build a worthy facility. (The new Mint Museum does not cut the mustard.) Also, it would be nice if they endowed performances more. The opera schedule is lame.
In addition, ethnic cuisine in Charlotte is limited and average.
Despite these issues, Charlotte is in the same boat culturally and in terms of the dining scene as most US cities.

I would love to see Charlotte get MLB. I lived in CO when the Rockies started playing, and we went to about 40 games the first season. The key to their success (other than the enthusiasm of having a new team) was making it affordable for anyone to go. We sat in the "Rock Pile" for many games at $1 a person, and had a blast. I really think it could work here too.

World Class City Culture
While we're on the subject-I know a number of people that winter in Fla. from NYC. They return every Spring and want to tell me all about the opera they saw in Sarasota, the theatre in bla, bla, bla.
Never fails. One couple went so far as to tell me they got a SUBSCRIPTION for NINE operas one winter. So, why my bolding? Because these people never once went to the opera in NYC and we live 12 miles from mid-town Manhattan. The last time they saw a play on Broadway they were wearing hoop skirts with poodles embrodied on them. So, as part of the ritual (kinda like a rite of Spring) I ask "Bob I never recall you going to the opera before here in NY." Answer:
"I know but it's so much easier there. I like it better. Etc."
So, for the past six months I have been keeping abreast of the cultural events in CLT. I have been using this site, web pages re: Clt, newspapers and magazines. There are more venues than you can imagine or get to in any given month.
Perhaps CLT doesn't fit the exact definition of WCC according to Wikipedia
but I question those (especially ex-NYers) who say they miss the cultural events in NYC, NJ, Phila.--do you now take advantage of what is offered to you in CLT? Did you go to cultural events in NY frequently and now miss it terribly? Is the music, dance, theater, so bad that you don't attend these performances either? Or are you partaking in the enjoyment of the cultural events in another setting, enjoying it differently, in spite of the fact it might not be "World Class"?

I concur with you both . I have nothing against baseball but why not bring a sport that seems to be popular now like Soccer or Lacrosse.
Something that would have huge fan attendance caters to most of the world and alot of energy.
