Wifey and I finally got around to taking the CCW course and it was a great experience! Roy, the instructor, was wonderful. He's been doing this sort of thing for decades and has many, many accolades for his service. He's actually quite the comedian too--I felt like I was at the Comedy Zone for half the class.

The course included NC Conceal/Carry Gun Laws, a video explaining justifications for using lethal force, exam, and range test. The test was really easy. I don't think anyone took notes during the class, and everybody passed. The range test consisted of firing 3 ten round sets at 3 yards, 5 yards, and 7 yards. It was really a breeze. Roy also gave a short private lesson to wifey at the end.

In total, the course lasted from 8:30am to about 1pm. I imagine it would have taken less time if less war stories and jokes were told, but I think it made the class worth it and less boring (which it was not).

The best part is he only charges $50!! My understanding is that he does it as a community service. He also has been teaching hunter safety classes for like 20 years if any of you need that for yourself or kids (usually 12-16 year olds). He also offers private classes, gun safety and operation training.

FWIW, I just read the last few posts of ani's solictor thread, and eddie would be facing murder charges if he shot somebody for trespassing. Even in Ohio, trespassing itself is not legal grounds to use lethal force. I think he needs to study up on his gun law before he gets himself some prison time.

Quote:
Defense of Property [in Ohio]

a. There must be immediate threat of serious bodily harm or death in order to use deadly force. Protecting property alone does not allow for the use of deadly force. Therefore, a property owner may use reasonable, but not deadly, force when he honestly believes that the force will protect his property from harm.

b. If a person’s property is being attacked or threatened, he may not use deadly force unless he reasonably believes it was the only way to protect himself or another from being killed or receiving serious bodily harm.

c. Deadly force can never be used to protect property only. Deadly force can never be used solely to protect property no matter where the threat to the property occurs.

d. State v. Williford (1990), 49 Ohio St. 3d 247; State v. Wenger (1979), 58 Ohio St. 2d 336; and State v. Marsh (1990), 71 Ohio App. 3d 64

Anyway, if anyone is interested in his courses, DM and I'll give you his contact information. The course took place at the National Guard Armory in Mooresville and the range test took place about 10 minutes north near exit 42 in Troutman. He offers the CCW class about every 2 weeks.

So if someone enters my home and I shoot to kill, I can be charged with murder? Or is that only in Ohio?

if someone enters your home during the middle of the night aka home invasion it is presumed that the person is armed and dangerous which gives you reasonable suspicion that harm could be imminent which allows you to use your weapon. It is VERY rare that a homeowner who shoots an intruder is prosecuted. There is an investigation done in all cases and if the homeowner articulates his case he will be exonerated. BTW, if you enter a dwelling(home) with the intent of committing a crime, that is a burglary not trespassing. Also armed and dangerous does not only mean carrying a gun. You could be killed by a screwdriver that the burglary has in his hands. Now if you leave your house and find someone breaking into your car you need to show that deadly force was about to be used on you in order for you to use your weapon.

Regarding home invasion there are a few different things to consider:

Let's say it's the middle of the night:

1) suspect is using force to break into your home through the window or door, doesn't matter. You have the right to use lethal force without seeing a weapon, i.e. you can shoot through the door or window.

2) if the suspect has entered your home, you do not have the right to use lethal force until you believe you are in immediate danger. The law changes once entry is achieved. If the intruder does a 180 with your tv, you cannot fire. If he begins to approach you in a threatening manner, take care of business.

3) let's consider you leaving your doors unlocked and you hear someone rummaging through your kitchen. You do not have the right to use lethal force simply because some one is in your home. It could be a dementia patient, for instance, and possible for you to be brought up on charges. You must be threatened to use lethal force.

Yeah, cheapest I've found. I've found prices up to $135 for this same course or $55 for 8 hours (exact same course-what happens when you take 15 minute breaks per hour). Roy doesn't stop for breaks and goes right through. Taking his course is a no-brainer!

If you shoot an intruder...we were told at our last HOA meeting from a CMPD officer that you need to use the correct terminology...you need to say to the DA or Judge..."I was in fear of my life". I thought that was nice of him to even tell us that.

Yep, those are the magic words.

And FWIW, you do not have to give a verbal command for the intruder to "stand down." Take care of business if you fear for your life.

And people...seriously...don't shoot to just hurt them so they can be released 4-5 times and maybe come back after you...put them down for good...remember you were in fear of your life.

That might sound mean...but is a dog eat dog world now a days.
