berry - I agree with you that Waxhax still remains a nice place to live, but I believe sam makes a good point. There always seems to be more stores going up without a commensurate amount of road building. It becomes even more expensive to modify roads once the buildings and stores have been erected. When will the concept hit these towns, of letting stores only be built when the roads to service them properly, have been modified to handle the traffic? It just seems like "build everything now and worry about roads later".
sam - Your image of Providence Road and the dirt blowing across it, made me laugh! It happened to me last week driving through there. I had "Lawrence of Arabia" in mind. I think if I had seen a camel, I would have lost it! BTW, many developers and real estate people read this. Don't give them any ideas! Can a " Sphinx" restaurant be far off, if you come up with those sorts of images? The problem is, that they would build it 4 ft from the edge of Providence Rd and then they'd scream bloody murder when NCDOT gets off its fat rear and decides to widen that section to four lanes. They'd be complaining that they would lose parking spaces and business. There is precious little planning for a future more than a year off here. No one plans for what the place will be like 10 or 20 years from now, and acts appropriately. Oh well, my road tirade is like spitting into the wind!

Waxhaw is a lovely place, it's just going through some growth spurts like all surburbia does. Hardly a hellhole, geez..... If we use your logic, then I guess Ballantyne, Uptown, Matthews, Southpark, Lake Wylie, Lake Norman, and Huntersville are all hell holes too...

The worst traffic in the Charlotte area is Providence Rd around the Union/Mecklenburg border around rush hour. Places like uptown don't have anything on us. Just my opinion.
Although I will say that I guess it's EASIER to drive on Providence Rd than some other places. After all, there's no need to worry about things like changing lanes......BECAUSE THERE AREN'T ANY LANES TO CHANGE TO!

Isn't it though?? The A/C in my car went out a couple of weeks ago when that ridiculous heat wave rolled through. You can only imagine how thrilled I was to drive on Providence that week.
And I'm afraid to even imagine what Waxhaw will be like a decade from now. One of its saving graces right now is the very low crime rate. Even that will be a faint memory ten years from now I'm afraid.

Just curious where else you have lived that a little traffic constitutes a hellhole. For 2 years I drove 90 minutes to cover the 32 miles from my house to my job. Construction is a bad thing? Businesses being constructed that will provide jobs to the people in the area is a bad thing?
Hellhole? Care to visit me for a week?

Again, I have no problem with construction or businesses, as long as the infrastructure is put into place to handle it all with as little disruption to the existing community as possible. That's about as far away as you can get from current Waxhaw.

I understand how bad the traffic is down Providence Road. I lived there from 1984 until about 2001, and my parents still live there, so I'm very aware of the ongoings in the area. However, the issue I took was your term hellhole, which was unfounded. Aggravating-yes, sprawling-yes, poor planning-yes, hellhole-absolutely not.

Yes, the roads and infrastructure around here are terrible, I will give you that, but Waxhaw is NOT becoming a hellhole. No offense, but it wasn't anything special to begin with. I have lived in Charlotte most of my life and I never thought people would actually want to live there, but they do. There are some nice neighborhoods and a few nice shopping centers being built to complement that. If they would widen Providence all the way to "dowtown" Waxhaw, then Waxhaw would be a very nice suburban town. I only see good things for the future of Waxhaw. Sorry you feel that way.

"Becoming" the key word my friend.
I don't know, you're probably right. "On the decline" might have been a better choice of words.

I totally agree... Again Sam that is your opinion..My dh drove 2 hours each way in NJ for work, he then commuted 2 hours to the city as well each way so Im sorry if some of us will disagree with you, this traffic to us isnt horrific..YET, and even if it is there are other ways to get around with back roads..and I agree with Carolina about everything else poor planning etc...it is what it is...We knew about the traffic and construction when we moved..and we are ok with it...

berry - You're too hard on Brooklyn! Camden NJ would make Brooklyn look like the Hamptons!
