You may be surprised what organizations are supported by United Way here in Charlotte. This is the list on UW's website. I am surprised that several of these organizations are supported by the UW. I am wondering why some organizations are not supported. Now I want to see some annual reports to find out just how effective these organizations are and what improvement they have made to the community through the dollars they have received. Unfortunately, not for profits are not required to publish annual reports and most, therefore, do not.

United Way is NOT a typical Fortune 500 company. There is absolutely NO comparison between UW's CEO and, say, BofA's CEO. It's a joke to compare King's salary to anyone else's since it's in a whole different category. It's why the military doesn't give sign-up bonuses to officers...they're supposed to be there for the honor, not the money.

On the topic of their car salesman 101 paper being circulated, my favorite is page 18. "How to completely avoid someone's question." Remember to smile folks...maybe even throw in a wink to the person who asked the question. It'll make them completely forget what they asked.
Nope, my hide is still pretty smooth and supple!

Default United Way what a Croc

King will receive the remaining 2 1/3 years of her salary – unless board members can find her a private sector job. In that case, they will not be responsible for paying the $290,000-a-year salary.

They are worried about the heat, so they let her go, while continuing to pay her. I would have rather seen her work the rest of her term. I never said she was bad at what she did, but now they just compounded the issue. They need some people with brains over there.

This is unreal. The board members behind this ought to have to face a public forum and answer questions about the reasons they even allowed this ridiculous situation to occur. No one cares about my retirement and I daresay 99.9% of the rest of the population in Charlotte do not have employers who make allowances to guarantee everyone has a very substantial (cushy, even) retirement fund.

Talk about irresponsible and elitist, as well. People give their hard-earned dollars to this organization and then the board members (who, for the most part, are making HUGE salaries themselves) cut a deal like this w/ the Director. The money it has taken to fund her bennies would have provided the entire budget for many small, struggling organizations out there.

Sickening and frankly, morally reprehensible -- these board members were responsible for DONATIONS from the public. I know I sure as hell didn't intend to pad someone's retirement account when I don't have one that impressive for MYSELF!!!!

I think the board members have completely lost sight of the meaning of the words "stewardship" and "fiduciary responsibility" - and that becomes even more understandable, when you realize some of the people on that board are involved in FINANCE. These are the same people who have led their institutions into BAD DECISION-MAKING w/ lending practices all over the USA.

The whole thing smacks of corporate hanky panky and I, for one, find it all outrageous.

The stupidity of paying someone in her position so much is criminal in my opinion. I remember all of the years in the military when I was basically coersed into donating to the Combined Federal Campaign (United Way). I know that the money donated goes to a whole aray of charaties and each takes its middle man cut. Anotherwords, of a dollar given, anywhere from 20 t0 80 cents gets to the intended source. I will never give to them. If I give to a charity, it will be directly without gready swines like this King woman.

Union County

List from: United Way of Central Carolinas, Incorporated.
Yeah, but...just think how much MORE money these groups could get if people just donated directly to them and NOT the United Way. I am just sick at how much United Way has wasted on high salaries and "administrative" costs. From now on I say just give to the groups you want to help.

WCNC showed a poll on the news last night saying that the recent United Way mess here in Charlotte will affect how much 29% of the people responding will donate.

Now that the grand plan of coersion starts next week (their campaign), it's interesting to see the board members tap dancing around the whole CEO issue. I like the latest spin I heard on the news, which went something like this: "we heard you, we'll look into the issues, just keep donating!".

Fat chance!

The Board continues to MANGLE this situation! I don't think any of us is asking for Ms. Pace to step down. The Board approved the outrageous compensation package. THEY ARE THE PROBLEM. The investigation that needs to take place should be w/ the Board members - and how they run the businesses they represent. And as far as the situation with the United Way, the Board should be held responsible. All the statements from the Board's PR agency are an INSULT. (Yes, the Board has paid a PR agency to handle this debacle they created; who is paying for THAT?????)

Read the bull below. I wanna know who their PR agency of record is . . . and how much they have been paid (not just for this, but for other work in the past). Pretty ridiculous that these Board members squander hard earned donation dollars on a dubious retirement package . . . but then add the $$ being spent to pay for a PR agency to put a spin on it . . . Unbelievable.
