If I lived in Plaza Midwood I'd feel a WHOLE lot better knowing I had these kinds of neighbors (Citizens Patrol) around. In fact, if I were thinking of buying a home, I'd be more likely to buy there than a surrounding neighborhood just because of this group! That anyone would complain about having proactive neighbors is just incomprehensible to me.
Definitely agree. In fact, the first thing I'd do as a new neighbor is find out how I could join the Patrol!

We all see the causes, how do we all see the solutions so differently? And when good people like Scott Yaminashi, a true hero who saved lives while getting shot himself doing so wants to stand up and form a proactive citizens group to patrol his neighborhood streets to help make them safer is CRITISIZED by liberals for doing so, I am just dumbfounded.

Here's probably the closest to a real answer that anyone can give you.
On both ends of the spectrum (right & left) you have a certain number of crackpots.

So...you would be saying the Plaza Midwood Neighborhood Assoc. President and other neighbors opposing the Citizens Patrol are "crackpots"? Seems too simplistic to me. And does this represent a change of political climate in any way as the op originally asked? I mean, since Charlotte has traditionally been known as a conservative city, where would this liberal thinking of critisizing a group wanting to be proactive against crime come from? Gee, I believe it comes from the fact that these citizens want to exercise their rights to bear arms, among other things like flashlights and radios And gun rights are something liberals and conservatives are never going to see eye to eye on. So...since there is more opposition to things like gun rights here in Charlotte now than there ever used to be, I'd have to say to our op that in actuality Charlotte is NOT as conservative as it used to be.

I don't think it represents an increase in crackpots. It just embodies the fact they are out there and always have been.

I cannot fully respond without deviating from the keep it local rule. I am saying that the group opposed to the patrols could be crackpots.
Go back and reread my addition to my last post - THAT is what this is REALLY all about.
Ok, I'll give you that. Maybe I just haven't noticed any kind of push to discourage the use of firearms, except when CMPD is instructed by Brass to inform the public not defend themselves and let the thug have their way with the victim.
One thing I'm happy about hearing on the news Tuesday was that the NRA will be spending $40 Million to advertise against "the other guy." That just goes to show you what "the other guy" can do if he becomes President. NRA isn't even sure if they will endorse the other "other guy" yet either.
Lots of Libertarian leanings in this region . . . I so believe that . . .
I hope you are right! We have 44 candidates running in NC this election cycle, and I hope all the Libertarian leaning voters in this region will consider breaking their Rep/Dem habit and give them a chance! Most of us do not have campaign websites up yet (mine will be up when I return from a much needed vacation next week), but the full list of candidates can be found here:
The Libertarian Party of North Carolina — 2008 North Carolina Libertarian Candidates (http://lpnc.org/candidates.php - broken link)
I believe this is the largest number of Libertarians running in our area in any year, so that is a very positive sign. A lot of good folks here!
Also ... Loves, the ball analogy was great. Can I use that?
So do all you libertarian's out there feel strongly enough in your beliefs to vote for Barr in the upcoming election? Will be interesting to see if states like NC and GA are really in play or not come November.
