I hope like heck they've found the right people (even though these two are proclaiming their innocence). This is a sad case. The victim and her family seem to be such positive and nice people with a lot going for them. I hope justuce is found.

New updates from the Gaston Gazette -

Two questions answered: What evidence do police have and what brought slain UNC Charlotte student to Mount Holly (http://www.gastongazette.com/news/dna_30046___article.html/agent_evidence.html - broken link)

Attorney: Someone has already confessed to killing Yarmolenko (http://www.gastongazette.com/news/phillips_30051___article.html/cooper_yarmolenko.html#slComments - broken link)

Instructor: Photo project may have led Yarmolenko to river's edge (http://www.gastongazette.com/news/howard_30085___article.html/yarmolenko_pictures.html - broken link)

I didn't know her but this case has stayed on my mind. I went to UNCC and I am very familiar with Mt. Holly. Every time I see the timeline I can picture Irina because I've been to those places.

9:45 a.m. Yarmolenko was last seen on campus taking an exam
10:18 a.m. Yarmolenko stopped at a credit union
10:35 a.m. Yarmolenko stopped at Goodwill on University City Blvd.
10:50 a.m. Yarmolenko stopped at Jackson's Java near campus
1:15 p.m. A jet skier found Yarmolenko's body on the banks of the Catawba River in Mount Holly

Thank you for the update, NCgirl. The case has stayed on my mind, too.

One of the guy's trial was supposed to begin tomorrow but he died this morning.

Suspect in Yarmolenko killing dies a day before start of murder trial (http://www.gastongazette.com/news/bell-51481-murder-trial.html - broken link)

Quote:
The 55-year-old man – one of two suspects charged with killing UNC Charlotte student Ira Yarmolenko in 2008 – died at his Mount Holly home Sunday morning, apparently of natural causes. His family called 911 about 10:20 a.m. and said he was having medical problems, said Gaston County Police Capt. Joe Ramey.

What a strange turn of events!

Well, if he was guilty he's in front of the ultimate judge tonight

Whenever I stop in at the Jackson's Java near UNCC, they always have a photograph on the counter of a young lady. It took me a few times to realize that it's a picture of Ira Yarmolenko, who I read was working there when she was killed. Very sad story.

A guilty verdict:

Jury finds Carver guilty in Yarmolenko case - CharlotteObserver.com (http://www.charlotteobserver.com/2011/03/21/2159538/friends-remember-a-vibrant-yarmolenko.html - broken link)

Still makes me so sad Ira sounds like such an awesome young lady.

I was surprised. Of course reading newspaper accounts is not the same as being there, but it didn't seem to me they had enough evidence for a murder conviction.

I was a junior at UNCC when this happened. It was right after the semester and final exams were over. I can not imagine having something like that happen to me or to my friends.
