Default Magnet Schools.

My family is relocating to Charlotte from Ohio. I would really like to go to a Music Magnet school. Does anyone have suggestions on a school. Or anyone currently attend one? Thanks.

I am interested in an answer too. I know a person who wants to move here but wonders if she can get the music magnet program for her 14 year old son. He is a gifted violinist and plays for the youth symphony in his home state. I am guessing he is in 10th grade?

CMS has NW school of the arts for high, there is a middle feeder school who's name escapes me. Union county has Central Academy of Tech and Arts for high and a new elementary program at Benton Heights Elementary for the arts.

Actually Northwest School of the Arts is the magnet you want - it is grades 6-12 and hard to get into. But encourage them to try! To me, it is one of the few true magnets left in this city. Here is a link to the school:

I looked at Northwest school of the arts. I'm a freshman though and they have no open spots.

Gosh Nicole, I'm sorry What instrument (s) do you play? Is private school an option for your parents?

Default Arts Options for School

I suggest that you put in for NW even though they have no spots. When you get the letter that you cannot be assigned there because of space, there will be info on how to appeal. Appeal it all the way to the school board and you will have a good shot at getting in.

Also, Charlotte Catholic hs has a strong music program and do some of the other private schools. There is also a NC boarding school for high school students specializing in the arts...and it is FREE.

Finally, some high school artist homeschool and do a LOT through community school of the arts and children's theater.

I play the clarinet.
I played first clarinet in the high school band as an eighth grader, so I would hate to go to a school with a lousy band program.
