I don't think so. I've been there plenty of times when you could wade at least two feet in and still see your toes Not sure why it was muddy looking to you. Was this from a distance or upclose?

I live off Lake Wylie and like lovesMoutains said..for the most part you can go a little ways in the water and still see your feet. But I will tell you that Lake Wylie has a mud bottom...so it is never crystal clear as some folks are use to seeing in various parts of the country where their lakes have more of a sandy bottom.
I have also seen it at times looking a little muddy...usually after a pretty good rainstorm. In addition there are quite a few new homes being built around here that can also add to the muddy look with their run off (not suppose to...but it does happen)

We noticed it right away as well. The water is a different color then most people are used to.It is a brownish color. It does not look very inviting to swim in,but alot of people do

Yes,I'm afraid it is not a very inviting lake.We visited summer (june) and oct.The color was very brown. The lake was VERY crowded with happy swimmers though.

I agree about Lake Wylie,I heard it and Norman were quite polluted now. I dont recall seening any "crystal clear" lakes in NC.Someone mentioned the mud being "red" or clay.Could be why the colors are as they are, anyone know of really clear lakes ?

That was why I made mention of the mud bottom in my original post (Lake Wylie)...as to why it is not "crystal clear".
The dirt/mud that we have in the Piedmonts is a red clay...(which is excellent for carpets...NOT).
Depending on where you are located in the Carolinas the land/dirt does vary.
We all have are own/different opinions but for my family and I....if you have trouble reaching us...you can find us at the lake (just not today...it's to cold)

Lucky for you-Living by a lake sounds fabulous.!(I wouldnt care if it was purple). Is this "clay/dirt" and good for growing gardens? And sorry, my DUH,I just reread the whole thread and you certainly did explain the reason for the color already.

No probem
Red Clay good for growing gardens?....it takes a little getting use to...but it can be done (heck they even have a gardening club here in Tega Cay). I on the other hand am still experimenting
