mm34b - I hope those maps from that excellent web site are correct, but I strongly suspect that the snakes' map reading skills are somewhat limited. Don't ever be surprised if you spot species that are not in their "supposed" ranges.

Just a matter of probability, but did you see they found an alligator in Webster City, Iowa last week? In June, a 5-footer was caught in the Chicago River. In July 2006, there was one in the French Broad River in Asheville.

Absolutely! Rural legend has it, that a water-
skier on the VA/NC border (Lake Gaston) skied in to a den (hive?) of them, and was bitten multiple times. Aside from that, there is plenty of habitat on the eastern coast of NC. They have a great snake exhibit at The Schiele Museum in Gastonioa.

EM - you will more likely see a black snake or a garden snake b/f you see a copperhead. But they are around. Like I said - almost six years and this is the only one we have spotted on our property and I stomp around in the woods w/ Miss Scarlett daily, year round.

First time I've heard that skier story attributed to Lake Gaston.
